Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Guided Kiwi Walk (EVENING)
5.00pm - 8.30pm (3.5hrs) Please note: Summer Hours are different (7.30pm-11pm).
Pick up/Drop off: Matakana I-Site. (Just outside the Cinema Complex in Matakana Village. (1hr North of Auckland).
This is an exclusive Airbnb tour into an amazing bird sanctuary that just so happens to have one of Auckland's favourite surf beach's, campgrounds and walking trails! Come with me as I show you my 'back yard'. No really, I literally grew up here. My father was the Park Ranger here for over 30years, and lucky us got to live and breath Tawharanui as much as we wanted!
This evening tour is a chance to hear and maybe even see the elusive nocturnal bird of New Zealand.... The Northern Brown Kiwi!!
Bring:
Your lovely selves and a quiet night time voice as to not scare these beautiful birds away. If you have one; a red lighted torch / head torch. If not, no worries as I have spare.
Decent walking shoes - trainers or hiking shoes.

Hi, my name is Ness and I am a born and bred kiwi lass from Tawharanui, North Auckland! I've travelled the world and am yet to find a beach and coastal area that beats Tawharanui! I want to share this amazing area with people and host people from anywhere and everywhere as tour guiding is my forte and profession! For the past 5 years I have worked as an outdoor hiking guide around various parts of New Zealand and also just started a small wine and craft beer tour business here in the Matakana Region. My passion is people and creating a genuine Kiwi experience!! (literally)

Donde estarás

You'll be transported in my modern minivan out to Tawharanui Park. We will then walk along side the beach at Anchor Bay, and up to the start of the Ecology Trail. From there we will quietly carry on our short walk, though well maintained track in search of Kiwi and listen out for their beautiful yet shrill call. The chance to not only hear but potentially see our national bird is the best chance you'll get in such close proximity to Auckland.

We had a really lovely evening in Tarwharanui park. Ness was a genuine, passionate and engaging host. She made us all feel welcome, and learnt everyone's names. The park itself was incredible to be in after hours, we were taken to a beautiful view point; then given a talk on the park and the birds and animals that reside there and supplied with homemade cookies and hot milo and then we left on our kiwi hunt. We couldn't believe it but the minute we stepped out from the hut where we had our talk and off on our trek, there was a kiwi right there! Those at the start of the group were able to see, but those at the back did miss out, but fair play to Ness, by the end of the trip she made sure we were all together and all quiet (!!) in order to get our kiwi experience, which we did. We were also able to experience the call of the kiwi; see a Kereru, an eel and a pāteke (rare brown teal- duck). Another thing that was truly mesmerising were the stars that night, absolutely incredible. Many thanks Ness!

Ness, right from the time we first got together made us feel welcome and engaged us all in what was to come, how we were to get best sightings, and went out of her way to try to see that everyone was able to spot our elusive birds. Recommended

We saw a baby kiwi!!!!!!!!!!! Possibly the most adorable little ball of fluff with an absurdly long beak poking around for snacks. He was so intent on his hunting that he didn't seem to notice the 7 of us (all shining red lights on him) for several minutes. We also saw a Morpork (native tiny owl that appears a bit cross-eyed) chilling on a fence post, a huge freshwater resident eel named Eric, and a Kereru (imagine a pigeon the size of a chicken) roosting in a tree. The crazy bit? Apparently this night was a-typical in that we didn't see as much as the tour groups usually see! The area has been in a bit of a drought, so most of the critters are less active than usual. The whole night was a wonderful experience and we highly recommend it. Ness was a fantastic guide; she gave us a lesson on native birds (what to look for, what to listen for, which ones are endangered etc) while we sipped hot milo and nibbled on home made cookies as we waited for the sun to properly set. She even brought gluten-free cookies for my gluten-intolerant partner!
