We loved our experience with Refugio Salkantay. It is a more independent and intimate experience than going with a larger tour group. You stay at beautifully built facilities along the Salkantay trail. comfortable beds, clean bathrooms and very hospitable hosts. The price includes meals every day (except the first breakfast) and portage for your bags for about three quarters of your hike. For the hike up to Salkantay Pass, if you are feeling the altitude, you can rent a horse/mule for 100 soles. We especially loved our stay at Llactabamba. You stay on the property of a local family that has a coffee plantation. they show you how they harvest coffee beans and had a great sense of humor. For an extra fee, they will drive you to the hot springs at Saint Theresa (highly recommended). Overall, we preferred this experience to a tour group. You miss out not having a guide but the trail is easy to follow and your hosts go out of their way to make sure you can find them after a long day of hiking. You still end up meeting and talking to other travelers on the trail, so you are not completely isolated. I highly recommend hiking to Machu Picchu with Refugios Salkantay. Thank you for a fantastic trip!

Using Refugios Salkantay was the best decision ever! Flor and her friends and family are very helpful and welcoming, especially Sami's family in Lucmabamba!! Only complaint is that the food could have been more varied. Great service overall

We did the Refugios Salkantay 4 day itinerary, and I can say without any doubt that there could've been no better way for us to experience the Salkantay trail. Flor and her network of friends and family were more than welcoming - and did everything to ensure we were comfortable, well fed and prepared for each step of the way. As soon as we arrived at Flor's place in mollepata, she noted that our packs were significantly heavier than we needed. We had brought big packs as we had arrived directly from the airport so we didn't get the chance to leave the bags at the hostel. However, Flor had a simple workaround and gave us a bag to discard extra intems in, which she promptly had sent to cusco where she also helped us make our hostel booking. After our hike, we arrived at our hostel in cusco and our stuff was safe and sound. The experience of staying with the families at Refugio's Salkantay was truly one of a kind. With authentic food, expert guidance, even a lesson on how to procure coffee, avocados and other plant materials - The experience at Refugio's Salkantay was a real highlight of my trip to Peru.

An amazing experience with an beautiful family. Like in the description its a small business but there is still very much a loving and family touch. The trek was very well organized and they always knew where you were but we were also independent for most of the hiking which made the hike stress free and enjoyable. There was not a single moment where I felt I was unsafe or unsure where to go. We did have to carry our packs for much of the time but they helped transport our bags during the most difficult days. Each night accommodations were very differnet but surpassed my expectations. Each night we were fed good food and stayed warm with all the blankets provided. The first night was in a lodge with absolutely incredible views, the second night was a lodge in an area that even haf a bar with other campers from various groups. The third night was my favorite, we stayed with a beautiful family on a coffee platation. Although they didnt speak any english they were the sweetest and happiest hosts. They heard it was my husbands birthday so sonia woke up 5am to make him a birthday cake for breakfast!! They made our stay truly special. This is the best way to do the trek I am so happy I found this group. The only thing to keep in mind is that the family speaks no english but added to the experience for us! Thank you refugios for such a wonderful experience! I will be sending my friends your way!!

This is a great way to trek Salkantay while avoiding the larger guided groups, paying quite a bit less, and knowing all your money is going to local families. The trail is gorgeous, from alpine passes to cloud rainforest, though bring good shoes for slippery mud and rocks at some points, and pack light. Also, be ready for a little adventure and the need to be flexible. Since you're not with a guide the whole time, you need to find your host at each stop, which is not always as easy as it may seem. 3 of my 4 hosts were extremely attentive and offered a great experience. Due to road conditions, one host could not arrive on time, and his family didn't know to expect me, so they did not want to serve me dinner. Finally, a guided group took pity on me and fed me, and at 8 pm my host arrived and was super apologetic. That place too wasn't a cozy home like to other nights, it was a hostel with many large groups, so know to expect that the second night. All in all, I'd recommend this, if you are up for a little adventure.

My name is Edwin Espinoza Sotelo, I am from Mollepata Peru where the famous alternative trek to Machu Picchu begins, Salkantay. I have been sending people on this route for years with my horses and with my friends as guides, cooks or arrieros. In 2012 my family and I began to construst small cabins along the Salkantay route. Living in the Mollepata region I was lucky enough to meet Nathan Heald who invited me to Climb Salkantay with him. Although I had hiked the pass for years, being my backyard and all, this was the very first time I would put on crampons and use a pick axe. It took us three years and many attempts to conquer this amazing but difficult Apu. Apu Salkantay! From here on out I have been climbing every mounatin in the Salkantay and Ausangate region. I been trekking and climbing these mountains for three years with Nathan. I have worked closely for 8 years now with SAE South American Explorers Club Cusco, and have been supplying excursions for Backpackers La Boheme for more than three years. I work very closely with Bill and Nic, who run Bill and Nic´s House on airbnb in Cusco and have been sending me backpacking trekkers for years, they also run an adventure agency called Haku Expeditions which are all inclusive which I help them with all the logistics on the route Salkantay.

This is a family run business. You will meet my father, Marino Espinoza, my mother, Mercedes Sotelo and my sister Flor De Maria Espinoza Sotelo. We all work together very closely to provide you the best and richest expierence on Salkantay. We help you to have an amazing trek and avoid the need for any kind of agency intervention. My father may be your horse guide or cook or maybe he will just hang out and chat with you before you leave Mollepata. My mom will cook you a great breakfast before you leave and my sister will help organize everything and give you the ride of your life in the back of our truck if you would like transport to Soraypamapa. We are a local family who love helping people do Salkantay on their own.
We run this cabin trek on a continuos basis and have had great success. We can´t wait to meet you.
