Orongo Point is a privately owned headland surrounded by the untouched waters of the Kaipara.

Situated 20 mins from Wellsford SH1 or if you prefer the scenic SH16 drive from Auckland through Kaukapakapa, only 1 hour 10 mins.

Orongo Point offers the ultimate getaway experience with 200 acres of private farmland and 3 kms of pristine forested coastline to explore, with access to its own private and magnificent white sandy beach.

El espacio
Orongo Point bach provides simple kiwi style bach accommodation and is the perfect base to explore this amazing part of New Zealand.

The bach is a rustic-styled, 2 bedroom timber hut with adjoining outdoor deck to enjoy the views of Lemon Tree Bay. Inside there is a master bedroom - with a luxurious queen size bed. The second bedroom offers bunk accommodation with two single beds. The kitchen is modern and well appointed with plenty of fridge space.

Timber lining gives the bach a rustic, natural charm which is surrounded by a mature garden and fruit orchard. The interior decor is cosy, but contemporary. Soft furs and natural fibres add to the feeling of simple luxury.

You are free to explore the coastline, beaches and farm at your leisure and enjoy the tranquility and remoteness this special piece of New Zealand has to offer.

Otros aspectos a destacar
Pets are welcome. We get a lot of visitors bringing their dogs with them. They love the freedom and space to run around too.

There is plenty of room amongst the park like surroundings of the bach to put your tents up and camp.

Please remember to bring your own linen and towels. We have plenty of duvets, blankets and throws to keep you warm and cosy.

We love our special part of New Zealand and encourage you to take your rubbish with you.

Property History:
The property itself has had a rich history. Initially belonging to local Maori, it was sold to the Queen in 1894 as part of the 1000 acre Kakaraea block. Following WWII the block was subdivided into its present form and gifted to a returning servicemen. During that time it operated as a sheep farm.

On the coast to the east of Lemon Tree Bay you can still make out the ballast piles of the tall ships that used to anchor in the Kaipara at the turn of the century. At low tide you can make out two large posts - they are all that remains of the masts from a ship that sank there.

In the 1970’s the US Marines built Run Road and lived on the property as they trained for the Vietnam War. As you look out to Moturemu Island you can still see the holes made by US cannons as they practised firing from Orongo Point.

During the 1980’s it was converted into a deer farm (the deer shed half way up the main race is still there).

Today as custodians of Orongo Point for future generations we have embarked on a major capital works programme in partnership with DOC (who are our neighbours and own the coastal forest where they are looking to reintroduce kiwis) and Auckland Regional Council to develop a sustainable, ecologically-friendly farming model providing coexistence of cows, bees, birds, fish and humans…...

Your stay at Orongo Point helps us continue that journey. We hope you have a great stay and enjoy this special part of New Zealand.

Have fun and relax to a slower pace of life.

Around Tapora:
Sand Island in Tapora is well worth a look if you are into bird watching, hiking, sand dunes and fishing. It is a favourite for locals.

You can launch boats from the back beach around high tide (5metres and under) or use one of the three local boat ramps at Stables landing, Port Albert (down from the General Store) and Journeys End Boat Ramp. Old Man’s Nose (Orongo Point) as it is known by locals is a great fishing spot to the left of the back beach. You will see boats fishing there throughout summer.

If you are in desperate need of civilisation we recommend the general store in Port Albert which is open every day except Tuesday for lunch/early dinner (8am to 7pm) as well as basic supplies. Great fish and chips and coffee. Further up the road is Wellsford and SH1 with all its amenities.

Atiu creek is wort a visit too. It was gifted to the people of Auckland by Pierre and Jacqueline Chatelanat).
