A cosy waterfront cabin on The Great Lake, Coldwater Cabin is the perfect place for a secluded wilderness escape. Relax on the deck with a glass of wine and watch the light dance across the lake, or curl up inside with a cup of tea and take in the views through the north-facing windows. If what you crave is the connection to wilderness only Tasmania can offer, then Coldwater Cabin is the place for you. Follow our stays and guests on Instagram: @coldwatercabin
Our cabin is an ideal retreat for individuals and couples alike. Every room looks onto to the lake, giving a feeling of constant connection to the Central Highlands outside. The warmth and ambience of a fire will be a highlight of your stay. The kitchen and living spaces contain wood stoves for heating and ample firewood. And, in the bedroom and bathroom, there are smaller electric heaters to keep you toasty when the temperature drops. Even though the cabin is cosy, the weather is often unpredictable ,so make sure to bring warm clothing for extra comfort. If you enjoy cooking, the kitchen has plenty of crockery and utensils, and the deck is the perfect setting for a meal. We stock a basic pantry that includes coffee beans and grinder, tea, salt, pepper, oil, and some dried herbs and vinaigrettes. You’ll need to buy fresh supplies before heading up the mountain. The closest Woolworths is 40 minutes away in Deloraine, and there is a small shop and pub meals available at The Great Lake hotel, if you get caught out. If you feel like spoiling yourself, we highly recommend trying some of the amazing Tasmanian wineries and fresh food suppliers on the drive up to the cabin. Curtains separate the bedroom from the living room, which gives you the option of getting cosy in the evening or waking to an uninterrupted view of sunrise over the lake. The king-sized bed has fresh linen and there are tonnes of woollen blankets for you to use. The bathroom is simple, with a shower and clawfoot bath with lake views. The cabin runs on tank water, so time is of the essence when it comes to showering. The cabin is incredibly special to us. We’ve spent loads of time designing, renovating and curating all the details so that it suits the natural landscape. It’s our very special family space that we want to share with like-minded travellers.
Miena is one of the coldest towns in Australia. It snows more than 60 days each year, including in during January, so you should prepare for any type of weather. Miena is in the bush and also full of wildlife. Wallabies, possums and deer roam the property, a wombat often pops up from underneath the cabin, and an echnida lives in the wood tanks next door. If you're really lucky, you might even spot a Tassie devil nearby. All this fauna makes it really important that you keep your rubbish in the allocated bins during your visit. For this reason also we have a strict no pets policy to promote wildlife in the area. If you’re into trout fishing, you’ve definitely come to the right place. There are plenty of world-renowned fly fishing lakes in the area. If you’re a walker, Liffey Falls is a 30-minute drive away and Lake St Clair, an hour. There are also a series of shorter walks close by, and plenty of local lakes to explore.

Once the home to the Tarraleah Cricket team, the Pavilion has been refitted into a comfortable cabin for 2. The Pavilion has a well equipped kitchen making it perfect for self-catering. The main living space and kitchen is open plan with a combustion wood fire to keep you warm and a couch and TV to relax with. The bedroom has a queen size bed and ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower. Set away from Tarraleah’s other accommodation, you can sit out on the deck and look out across the old town oval – a few trees and a seldom used heli-pad might get in the way of a cricket game today, but make for a lovely view. Perhaps even spot some of the local wildlife….. Wallaby’s wombats, a possum or two and wake to a kookaburra
Tarraleah Estate is a picturesque piece of living history, located in the Tasmanian Central Highlands. A pleasant surprise off the highway that offers the perfect opportunity to get away from the ‘day to day’ and relax. Once a working town for Hydroelectric pioneers, Tarraleah has been refurbished and renovated to provide you with the perfect hideout or base for your next West Tasmanian adventure. Tarraleah is no longer an active town….. so alas, no grocery store, post office or even public toilets. Perfect for independent travellers, we offer self-contained accommodation with all the comforts of home. Our Cottages are beautifully styled in 1930s décor and our cabins are incredibly comfortable and functional. While Tarraleah Estate boasts up to 20 Residents in the Summer time, our winter population drops to a total of 4 people, with a few day time additions, and some very friendly (and always hungry) ducks, geese and hairy Highland cows. So please come and stay and base yourself here while visiting the Wall, Lake St Claire or for your next Fly-fishing adventure. Tours can be booked in advance, but no prior arrangement is needed to visit the 9 hole golf course, explore one of the walks, make it to the waterfall or visit the Hydro Lookout. Spacious and well maintained gardens are home for the local wallaby’s wombats and possums, and remember to keep an eye out for eagles, superb fairy wrens and even lyre birds.

Located only 50 meters from the waters edge of Little Pine Lagoon Little Pine Shack is the best and most comfortable accomodation in the area. The view through the panoramic north facing window of the living room allow for uninterrupted views of the lagoon. Watch the ever changing weather patterns, the fish rising, the birdlife and if you are very lucky a platypus quietly simming by. There is no better place to rejuvenate and invigorate your spirit and energy. If you are not into fly fishing - learn - or alternatively use the Shack as you base to explore the highlands. Visit Liffey Falls, Lake St Clair, Deloraine and many other wonderful places. For photos search on line. www.littlepineshack.com.au Minimum 2 nights for 2. $50 for each extra person

The shack has 2 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms: 2 x queen, 1 x double. The kitchen is well equipped and well stocked with the pantry basics to cook up a feast.
Our Central Highlands shack at Miena is a quality solid timber build by a local builder. It sits at the top of the block with glimpses of the Great Lake. The drive to Miena is about 1:30hr from Launceston and about 1:45hr from Hobart. It's perfectly located for trout fishing or just to sit back with the cosy fire and hopefully catch a glimpse at the local deer and wallabies grazing around the shack. Enjoy fishing at the many lakes during the day and wander down to the Central Highlands Lodge for an evening drink or dinner. If you enjoy cooking as much we we do, you will find the kitchen very well equipped. We offer 3 bedrooms: 2 with queen beds and 1 with a double bed, all with electric blankets, high thread count sheets and 100% goose down quilts. There are two bathrooms, one of which is an ensuite. We have a single floor mattress available on request that can go in the double room. The shack has ample parking for at least 6 vehicles as well as a boat turning bay. Miena is a quiet and remote town that primarily attracts trout fishing enthusiasts. The shack is in a quiet street away from the highway. Late check out is usually available by request at no extra cost in the off peak seasons, depending on when our next booking is. The coffee machine is an Aldi coffee machine and is compatible with Aldi espressi pods. We have been told that the following are also compatible: Woolworths/Caffitaly Gloria Jeans MAP Lavazza Blue
The shack is on a small residential block and neighboured by other shacks. Miena is a small fishing town and has a general store with a petrol pump and payphone, The Great Lake Hotel and The Central Highlands Lodge, both of which provide dinner and drinks. The Lodge is within walking distance but you'll need to drive to the pub. Grocery shopping must be done prior to driving up to the Central Highlands.

Saludos, Chris

Tarraleah is a picturesque piece of living history, located in the Tasmanian Central Highlands. Once a working town for Hydroelectric pioneers, Tarraleah has been refurbished and renovated to provide you with the perfect hideout or base for your next West Tasmanian adventure. Tarraleah is no longer an active town….. so alas, no grocery store, post office or even public toilets. Perfect for independent travelers, we offer self-contained accommodation with all the comforts of home. Our Cottages are beautifully styled in 1930s décor and contain everything you will need to self cater (except the food and drink that is). Accommodation receives a basic service daily, and even the firewood is restocked to help keep you toasty through the Tasmanian winter.
