“A "Mainland Island" Zealandia is completely pest-free, so has a large number of native birds breeding there, and launching from this open air sanctuary to repopulate Wellington City. Good walk, lovely views, visitors centre.”

“Lots of short (flat) or long (hilly) walks through the Botanical Gardens. Nice cafe by the Rose Gardens (a short flat walk from the car park) called ‘Picnic’. Some tracks in the Gardens take you up to the suburb of Kelburn where there are some nice shops (suggest Cerise clothing for the ladies..!) and cafes. You can then do a loop around by the top of the Cable Car and walk back down to the Gardens. Or get the Cable Car into Lambton Quay, Wellington for a spot of shopping if you’re not limited by car parking restrictions. ”

“Fantastic little area of native bush amongst the suburbs of Wellington. Great bird life too. Probably easiest to get there by car although it is also on a bus route. ”

“A good place to visit on Wellington’s south coast, possibly following a visit to the Brooklyn wind turbine. There is an easy coastal walk (sturdy shoes recommended) to a fur seal colony from the car park. Note: keep a reasonable distance from the seals so you don’t stress them. ”

“We have some excellent hiking trails right on our doorstep that wind through the regenerating native bush in Polhill Reserve. The entry point is only 3 minutes away from the bottom end of Karepa Street. The Polhill Reserve loop is suitable for those of average fitness and takes from 45 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on your fitness level. There are plenty of shorter walks you can take if you want something easier: 2 suggestions: Head down to Aro Street (around 30 minutes) for refreshments including craft beer (Garage Project), coffee, or bread or pastries (Arobake), or alternatively walk up to the Brooklyn Wind Turbine for stunning panoramic views of Wellington. ”
