“We have some excellent hiking trails right on our doorstep that wind through the regenerating native bush in Polhill Reserve. The entry point is only 3 minutes away from the bottom end of Karepa Street. The Polhill Reserve loop is suitable for those of average fitness and takes from 45 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on your fitness level. There are plenty of shorter walks you can take if you want something easier: 2 suggestions: Head down to Aro Street (around 30 minutes) for refreshments including craft beer (Garage Project), coffee, or bread or pastries (Arobake), or alternatively walk up to the Brooklyn Wind Turbine for stunning panoramic views of Wellington. ”

“This suburb is located close the CBD (central business district) and with the closest beaches to the central city, it’s a lovely part of Wellington, day or night, for a drive around or a wander. Oriental Bay is part of Wellington Harbour with lovely views back to the city and surrounding hilly suburbs. It’s basically a continuation of the Wellington Waterfront walk. For the cooler months if you fancy a swim, there’s a large indoor swimming pool called Freyberg Pool (lane swimming available) before you get to Oriental Bay Beach which is a popular swimming spot in summer. Good cafes and coffee carts are located around the Bay. ”

Beach
“The beach has reasonable size parking area, nice golden sand, a good grassy reserve area and small cafe located behind the beach. Scorching is a safe location for swimmers and limited swells and generally if there is a wave, conditions wouldn't be pleasant. The area has good rock fishing locations that are easily accessible and therefore the beach is popular year round.”

Trail
“There is a great website which explains this lovely hike that takes you from the city to our bay. Requires some level of fitness and allow 6 or 7 hours. Begin the hike by taking the bus into town. Please disregard the title which says it is in Kingston. It actually begins near Parliament. Best done November thru March.”

Trail
“There is Limited access to vehicles on this gravelled road so it is good for walking or cycling beside the harbour. It is only a short walking distance from the final bus stop on the Eastbourne route, and you can hire a bike to use at the bike shed on the way to Burdan Gate, the starting point.”
