art of the Nova Scotia Museum family, the J.C. Williams Dory Shop perfected the Shelburne Dory and turned out over 50,000 since it opened its doors in 1880. At the peak of the industry, seven shops operated along the waterfront. One builder, Sidney Mahaney, had his hand in 10,000 of these small boats built to outfit schooners for offshore fishing. 10 blocks wide and centuries deep in heritage, architecture and legends. Imagine: arriving with 10,000 others from New York and the American Revolution. Clearing the land, struggling to survive and thrive. Becoming a citizen of this 18th Century Loyalist town as it flourishes as a major shipbuilding and fishing centre! Witness the age of sail as it wanes and gives way to a new era that would change the face of the historic waterfront forever: Hollywood! Electrical cables were buried and buildings were refurbished or erected when films such as The Scarlet Letter were filmed on the waterfront over 20 years ago.

Regional Craft & Souvenir

Hooking a rag rug reused precious scraps of fabric and worn out clothing. Quilting grew out of the same need to be frugal with valuable resources while supplying the family with functional household items. Both became art forms. In the heritage property Coyle House at 24 Dock Street, local volunteers put their skills and generations-deep know how to work, creating usuable and beautiful works of art. Some of the proceeds from "Tottie's Store" go back into preserving and interpreting the Historic Shelburne Waterfront.
