The south entrance is closer to La Quinta. Hit the ranger station for the pass, map and a lovely hike right nearby. If you do the full loop, ensure you bring food, water, appropriate clothing and sun protection and have enough gas in the car. It’s cooler there in the winter. Cell service is sketchy. Be safe!
