Sightseeing

This is the largest active Mammoth site in the United States and a great treat for all the family. The introductory film is well done. Geologic specimens and panels before you even enter the enclosed site are very useful in understanding the Black Hills. Inside, you can walk through the site and the interior exhibits are also very informative. Did you know that there were two kinds of Mammoths in North America?

This is my favorite store in all of South Dakota!!! Beautiful Lakota Art as well as a selection of other brand name items and clothes. A whole second veranda dedicated just to beads. The upper floors dedicated to amazing art works. Great book selections, especially on Native American topics as well as South Dakota topics and the West. Dangerous to your pocket books, but a feast for the eyes and soul!

This is the most beautiful lake of all the bodies of water in the Black Hills. Hike all the way around it. Enjoy the sparkling mica in the stone formations. Kayaking is allowed.

Custer State Park is a must and you must drive the whole Wildlife Loop of the Park and explore the side roads. You will love the buffalo--but keep your distance for safety reasons. Also the prairie dog towns are fascinating to watch.

City/town information

Custer is the gateway to Custer State Park, the Black Hills National Forrest, and Crazy Horse Monument. Main street is chocked full of interesting shops and places to eat. Access to the Michelson Trail is on the edge of town. People are helpful and friendly. Sylvan Lake is only a hop skip past town as well as the famous rock-cut tunnel and Needles Hwy. Custer also has the largest grocery store outside of Rapid City (there is a smaller store in Hot Springs too).

Great cross-cultural experience!!!

Much more than Mt. Rushmore! This is a whole cultural center with multiple exhibits of Native Artifacts, a great book store, Native Dance Performances during tourist season, a good restaurant, and most importantly a small college for Lakota Youth. While you will rarely see Native Americans at Mt. Rushmore, they feel comfortable at Crazy Horse Memorial because they asked for the Memorial to be built and they chose the topic, and the site runs only on donations and grants--federal aid has been refused from its inception.
