Long before there was a Buzzard's Roost trailhead, we would hike out our back door to the peak. It's about 45 minutes to the top, just go out the back door and up the ridge. At the top just keep following the ridge. Take water and a good hat, weather can change quickly in the hills and summer hail is common. On a clear day you can see Black Elk's Peak (BEP) . They say BEP this is the highest point west of Rockies until one reaches the Swiss Alps. It's the site of the Lakota spring ceremony, " Welcoming the Thunders".

Food scene

Don't want to go into town but want gas, a bar (pool and foosball tables), restaurant, or small items you can hit Johnson Siding. It's about 4-5 miles further up highway 44.

Spiritual experience

The racism towards American Indians in SD and especially the Black Hills area is palpable. Rarely do non-Natives consecrate the Black Hills as the Lakota and other tribes in this region did and do! Dave Snyder's Sanctuary demonstrates reverence, respect and love for mother earth, creator and sacrifices American Indians have made for this country. This place brings healing and reconciliation like nothing else I have experienced in the sacred He Sapa.

Active Activities for everyone

This is the South Dakota's Rails to Trail experience and a national gem! My 3 year old grandson can do the downhill section from Dumont to Rochford, on this strider. Whether you do the whole trail or just the downhill section, you''ll never forget the ride.

Kids fun

If you have kids, story book island is a "must". The amazing outdoor playland, has bigger than life-sized story book characters. Kids and adults love it. We prefer to visit towards the end of in the day, after the heat. We try to reserve at least 1-2 hours so as not to rush the children.

From the parking lot, there are lots of steps up a variety of dinosaur sculptures. Still, its a pretty quick stop, less than an hour. Children love to sit on and have their photos taken with the dinosaurs. We like to go towards the end of the day, after the heat, to view amazing sunsets.
