Beaches

Gwithian Towans Beach is my all time favourite beach, about half an hours drive from Devoran. Blasted by the breeze off the Atlantic, the magnificent beach at Gwithian Towans is always a colourful scene of windsurfers on the water blokarts on the beach and kites in the sky. Backed by sand dunes tufted with wild grass, at low tide there is a vast amount of sand to enjoy and large areas of rock pools are uncovered, which are great for kids to explore. The beach is a favourite destination for surfers as the constant swell coming in from the ocean provides good all year round conditions. Common seals are a regular sight near the beach and the area is a breeding ground for colonies of seabirds such as guillemots, razorbills and cormorants.

A particularly popular beach and perfect for splashing about, miles of golden sand, huge surf, and sand dunes, it’s a pretty impressive place. Starting from the village, it’s easily accessible which is ideal if you’ve got young ones in tow and you could just plonk yourself on the sand close to the village, put down your beach towels and relax. There's a selection of cafe's and bars close by, serving snacks and drinks throughout the main holiday seasons. If the tide’s right out, do the place justice and have a walk up the beach to Ligger Point, just a 2 mile jaunt away.

Located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this Blue Flag award winning beach is one of Cornwall’s most popular surfing beaches bordered by soft golden sand and backed by large dunes and dramatic cliffs. From the beach at low tide you can walk to the neighbouring and equally stunning beach at Chapel Porth to the east. Porthtowan's large expanse of sand, perfect for a game of rounders or cricket, makes Porthtowan a firm family favourite, there’s even a children’s play park at the top end of the beach.

Set at the foot of the valley containing the sub-tropical gardens of Glendurgan is the tiny village of Durgan. Consisting of a clutch of cottages (mostly owned by the National Trust) Durgan overlooks the Helford river with stunning vistas in all directions. The beach at Durgan is a pleasant mix of grey sand and shingle with plenty of rocks and rockpools at either end to keep everyone occupied. Whilst swimming is fairly safe in this sheltered location one should be aware there is no lifeguard service. Durgan has a strong boating tradition and there is a slipway running down the beach along with moorings just offshore. It is also home to the annual Durgan Regatta on the last Sunday in August.
