Beautiful trail, meadows, flowers, slightly sloped and a few small streams. Then you get to the Vista point and it is simply breathtaking with the granite domes and slopes and boulders all around for as far as the eye can see. Then you go DOWN the granite canyon. The lake is so peaceful and serene. Not real big, but absolutely gorgeous. Definitely a great place to swim, fish, relax and sunbath, or camp for the night.

This National Monument preserves and protects the Devils Postpile columnar basalt formation, Rainbow Falls and the pristine mountain scenery. There is a parking area next to the Devils Postpile Shuttle Stop. Although the falls are on National Park Service land, most of the trail wanders through Inyo National Forest. Visitors interested in a moderate day-hike can make a loop, embarking from the Ranger Station's trailhead to the waterfall and returning via Shuttle Bus Stop 9 (Rainbow Falls Trailhead) or Shuttle Bus Stop 10 (Reds Meadow Resort). The bus can return hikers to the monument's ranger station, other bus stops in the Reds Meadow Valley, or the Adventure Center in Mammoth Lakes. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen for every member in your hiking group as the walk to the Rainbow Falls is very hot, dry, and has little shade.
