Sightseeing

Only about 1 mile north of 4 Pines Cottage, Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum shares it's location with the Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery. Learn the history of the area in this charming museum, then feed the trout at the fish hatchery. The hatchery is the oldest fish hatchery west of the Mississippi and has been in operation since 1888! There's something for every age group here!

Winding it's way from Mt. Shasta City up along the flanks of Mt. Shasta for 14 miles, this scenic highway offers stellar views, awe inspiring forests, meadows and trailheads. Visit Bunny Flat and the Old Ski Bowl where climbers begin their ascent to the top of Mt. Shasta. During the winter, the highway is closed at Bunny Flat where winter recreation opportunities abound! Use the Bunny Flat parking area to begin your Backcountry ski, snowshoe, sledding or snowmobiling adventure.
Protected by the California Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (1974), the natural beauty of the McCloud River Falls is not to be missed. A well-maintained trail offers 3 gorgeous waterfalls in a four mile round trip. Popular with fly fisherman, you may be fortunate to see an angler trying his or her hand at luring in native redband trout. A parking lot at each waterfall gives access to ADA compliant trails to overlooks.

If you wish to see a gorgeous alpine lake during your visit, Castle Lake is a must! At 5,440', Castle Lake is located at the end of a paved road just 10 miles from 4 Pines Cottage. During the summer, you can enjoy hiking the many trails, swimming, kayaking, picnicing, or simply taking in the beauty of the lake with it's granite faced headwall on the opposite side.

Winter fun! If you have children, or are still a child at heart, Snowman's Hill has some of the best winter sledding around. Located on Highway 89 between Mt. Shasta City and McCloud, this non-maintained, but free site attracts lots of people. A restroom is available in the parking lot.
