Food Scene

The Pantry at Maxy farm has been open for less than a year but is already a hit with locals. The food is imaginative and inexpensive. My favourite is the gin cured salmon with eggs benedict, but I've also enjoyed the bacon on avocado toast along with," bulletproof coffee," a mix of coffee with coconut milk. Definitely worth a visit!!

Parks & Nature

The River Ribble runs through the middle of Preston and has this spacious park on one of its banks. Originally constructed by mill workers and paid for by John Peel it is a legacy that has been enjoyed by generations of Prestonians and many visitors. It helps that in what used to be a derelict bandstand, there is now a beautifully designed building that houses information on the park and the obligatory coffee shop. At the western boundary of the park is The Continental pub. They brew their own beer and produce food which will delight the most discerning palate.

Sightseeing

This is a museum with a difference !! It's not fusty or static, but a hive of activity. There regularly seems to be something happening here. From community choirs to exhibitions about the history of the city. Preston has been a place which has spawned many new inventions. It was central to the wool trade and at one time was the richest borough in England. It has been voted the second best place in the country to live and feels like a city on the way up.

Arts & Culture

This is a museum with a difference. There's always something new happening here. Expect the unexpected, a community choir singing, art exhibitions and displays bringing the history of the city of Preston to life. It was once the richest borough in all of England. The city has spawned many famous inventors, many linked to the textile trade. Arkwright made his," spinning Jenny," and Courthaulds first invented nylon here. In recent times we have been voted as the second best place in the country to live. We are heading for first place, so watch this space or come and find out why, for yourself.

Getting Around

We have high speed rail links to Birmingham and London in the south and Glasgow and Edinburgh in the north. When the train drivers can be bothered to turn up for work, you can also hop on a train for the lakes or Blackpool. Two ends of the spectrum ; don't catch the wrong train.

Shopping

We are spoilt for choice. Morrisons and Lidl are five minutes away for a weekly shop by car, and for those who want a simple life, head out of the flat and head into the well equipped Premiere shop which is on the doorstep. It would be remiss of me not to mention the finest shop in all of Preston, which is Saint Catherine's Bookshop which is right under your feet. It's not only the hub of the community, but it also sells the most amazing books at a fraction of their original price. It's professionally run and all the proceeds support the local hospice. You've gotta give it a coat of looking at.

Ok. I know I've sung the praises of the bookshop downstairs, so I don't need to cover that again, but let me give you a rundown on the other shops in the area. Well there's Mike's Premiere store quite literally on your doorstep, a laundry, a ladies hair dresser, a butty shop and I'm sure there's another one ? Oh yes ! 100yards down the road is a shop that is a treasure trove of second hand goods. Last week I met a lady who had just purchased an antique chamber pot that she was going to use as a planter. It's all here, you've just got to look.

Everything Else

For those who want a walk on the flat, go for Lancaster canal which starts five minutes from the front door, and heads northwards through lovely countryside towards Lancaster. For those wanting a gentle ramble on rolling hills, head for Beacon fell. Well defined paths and a particularly good cafe make this a worthwhile destination. Barton Grange is the curved ball in my list of obscure recommendations, it's got a curling centre, cinema complex, ten pin bowling, crazy golf course, garden centre, kitchen shop, gift shop, restaurant and the most incredible gents urininals you have ever seen. If your a lady..... your unlikely to ever see them. You'll have to visit the place, or ask me.....
