Food Scene

Belgian cuisine, mid-high price range. A little walk from the apartment (15 to 20 minutes), but offers an authentic Brussels menu entirely based on 'witloof' ('white leaf', chicory). It's best to make a reservation (+32 2 245 03 22). Open in the evening.

This square is iconic for 19th century urbanist ideals; I particularly like the surrounding buildings. From there you can take tram 55 to Brussels-North. Weldoener, or Bienfaiteur, both literally mean "well-doer" (benefactor, do-gooder).

If you're not afraid of the unknown, head towards Brabantstraat. You'll feel like you're in Turkey, Morocco and Poland at the same time. It's on the way to Brussels-North railway station. Only recommended during the day, avoid passing there at night, you may feel uncomfortable.

Drinks & Nightlife

Small, low key bar in the middle of the park where locals gather to have a typical Brussels beer. If possible, ask if you can give the 'wipschieten' a go ('wip shooting', popinjay in English), a typical Flemish sport.

Arts & Culture

New national train museum situated in the old railway station of Schaarbeek, which in itself is already worth seeing (built in the late 1900s in Flemish neo-renaissance). Belgium having built the first, and most dense, railway network on the European continent, the museum also covers the coming of age of Belgian society. Recommended for raindays.
