Parks & Nature

“Guests interested in nature recommend visiting the Natural reserve of Castelvecchio, a few kilometers west of San Gimignano where you can admire the rocky spur of the ruins of the important medieval stronghold of Castelvecchio. In the nature reserve you can admire the characteristic flora of the maquis and find many specimens of yew, a very rare tree, remnant of the vegetation existing some millions of years ago. You can also make bird watching to discover some rare specimens of birds such as: The White, the African Stonechat, the Peregrine falcon, the Redstart and the small.”

Places to visit

“If you spend a few days in San Gimignano and do not mind a few more kilometers ( km. 52 time 1:02), we recommend you to visit the San Galgano complex. The complex consists of the Eremo or Rotonda di Montesiepi and the ruins of the great San Galgano Abbey of Circestense and is one of the most evocative in Tuscany In the Rotonda di Montesiepi is found, stuck in the rock, the Sword of San Galgano. San Galgano was a daring and dissolute knight born in 1148 who will convert and become a servant of the God by deeply sticking his sword into the rock so as to make a cross with the hilt. ”

“About 45 minutes drive from San Gimignano, you can reach Volterra, a city is definitely worth visiting. In Volterra the history has left its mark with continuity from the Etruscan period until the nineteenth century, with artistic and monumental remains of great importance , which can be admired simply walking through the streets of the historic center , but also visiting the city museums : the Museum Etruscan , the Civic Art Gallery, the Museum of Sacred Art , the Ecomuseum of Alabaster . Medieval festival: Volterra AD 1398 2018 August 2nd Sunday and 3rd Sunday

To spend a beautiful day of sea and art, you can visit the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia. The Archaeological Park includes the area where the Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia stood, known since ancient times for the intense metallurgical activity linked to the production of iron. The Gulf of Baratti was one of the most important Etruscan ports. Now it is a small glimpse of unspoiled nature that creeps between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ligurian Sea with crystal clear water and a beach with silver reflections due to the presence of iron. Populonia, an ancient Etruscan city, dominates the Gulf of Baratti. It is an unforgettable experience, the ideal destination for a cultural holiday immersed in nature and history. Distance from San Gimignano km. 108 time approx: 1:45
