The Medieval town of Chinon is 23km from La Maison Tumtum Arbre, on the banks of the Vienne river, with winding streets up to the exceptional Forteresse Royale de Chinon, (open all year) listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Fortress was the preferred residence of Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and birthplace of their son Richard the Lionheart . The Fortress was also the location of Joan of Arc’s confrontation with the Dauphin Charles VII inspiring him to reclaim his kingdom.

The pretty town of Saumur is located on the banks of the Loire and is 32km from La Maison Tumtum Arbre. Saumur dates back to the 4th century, it’s original inhabitants being troglodytes. Visit the town’s imposing chateau, originating from the 14th century and becoming the comfortable residence of Duke Rene d’Anjou during the 15th century. Saumur is also home to the French Calvary Academy and it’s celebrated Cadre Noir. Guided tours are available most of the year with performances from February to October.
