Melbourne.

With so many options to choose from in Melbourne, it can be overwhelming. So we figured we would do what we can to try and assist you in experiencing Melbourne at its absolute finest. Enjoy!
Just across Flinders Lane from Centre Place, bustling Degraves Street was one of the first Melbourne 'laneways' to make such a ruckus. Join the happy throng, which includes students and shoppers, tourists and lunchtime workers, on this pedestrian walkway linking the city's fashion precinct with Flinders Street Station. Take your friends from out-of-town to Degraves Espresso, a quintessentially Melbourne cafe experience. Despite the Parisian vibe cast by the cafe umbrellas in the shadow of the impressive Majorca Building, the dining on Degraves veers towards the Italian, with Il Tempo and Andiamo leading the charge. For the sugar fiends, there's Little Cupcakes and Waffle On. Sharpen up with a short course at the Centre for Adult Education campus, stocking up on artisan notebooks at Il Papiro and canvassing the goods at Senior Art Supplies. Traverse the cobblestones with new kicks from Sole Devotion, adorn the earlobes with quirky wares from Sine Qua Non and celebrate all things Victorian at Clementine's. Descend the stairs to subterranean Campbell Arcade, which connects to Flinders Street Station. Check out the artworks in the Dirty Dozen exhibition windows or enjoy more culinary and creative adventures at Cup of Truth, Corky St Claire and the curious zine outlet, Sticky.

Many are those who have lingered in an NYC coffee shop mulling over ways to combine the local style, vibe and cuisine with something to drink that's well, a bit more Melbourne. It took the folks from Bowery to Williamsburg to make the almost all-American vision a reality on Oliver Lane, with the Bowery subway station décor, US diner menu, and Brunswick's own Padre coffee as the kicker. Also at 123 Hardware Street, Melbourne.

Idle the afternoon away by the bluestone cobbles of Centre Place and become part of a Melbourne postcard scene. Though you might recognise it from the stereotypical images of the city's famous laneways, Centre Place still surprises and delights. Changing stencil art and graffiti provide a sensory overload best dealt with by squeezing into Jungle Juice for an international coffee. Soups and crepes will tempt, as will the dumplings at ShanDong MaMa Mini. Browse threads and accessories at iconic Melbourne fashion house Kinki Gerlinki and then clamber up the narrow stairs to Hell's Kitchen and survey the scene below over a cold afternoon beer. Cross over Flinders Lane to Degraves Street for more coffee, eats and treats, and then soak up the arty, subway vibes of Campbell Arcade.

The name says it all, really. Named after the Australian musical heroes, ACDC Lane is the physical embodiment of Melbourne's enduring love affair with dirty, low-down rock 'n' roll. Home to the infamous Cherry Bar, where every young hoon and swashbuckler has gotten into strife at some stage, this little corner of the city is what kick-started the laneway lifestyle way back when. Things are a little different now, or course. Sharp suited professionals and foodies in hipster jeans now line the cobblestones looking for the latest culinary sensation. But Cherry Bar still carries the torch and the street art covering every nook and cranny of this hallowed ground is a reminder that the beat goes on. If you are on the hunt for flavour rather than noise, pop into Pastuso for Peruvian street food and pisco-based cocktails, or turn the corner into adjoining Duckboard Place where you'll find high-end Indian, Chinese and even Danish cuisine.

Walk down the famous bluestone laneway and admire the street art that has made the Melbourne urban art scene known across the globe. Take in the dizzying array of colours, characters and shapes created by local and international artists alike. Pick out everything from stencils and paste-ups to murals and installations. Take a wander on your own or join one of the popular walking tours to get some background on the artists and their work. Take a detour round into Rutledge Lane and explore the work lining the walls, windows and wheelie bins of this sister 'gallery'. Once you've had your fill of the colour and mayhem of the street art, slow things down with a refreshing cocktail at Bar Tini – a popular pre-gig drink spot for the Forum Theatre crowd. Venture down one of Melbourne's iconic laneways to the old Honky Tonks and let the team behind Coda tempt you with their Indian-inspired menu. Drop by for casual after-work drinks and a shared plate in the front bar or settle in for the full restaurant experience, lauded by both the Good Food Guide and Australian Gourmet Traveller.
Head up the stairs at Loop Project Space & Bar to a rooftop cocktail bar that knows its city, and its public, very, very well. Sip on a decadent signature cocktail or a hard ice tea in an exotic garden setting surrounded by panoramic views of the CBD. A four-section, retractable awning system may sound like overkill but come winter, or spring, or… anyway, this set-up makes for a chic open-air drinks session with nary a thought for the forecast.

It makes sense that Melbourne's most sophisticated cocktail bar is also one of the city's highest bars, looming over the city from the 55th floor of the Rialto. Holding the keys to the Vue de Monde cellar, the Lui Bar's snacks are almost as good as its drinks, which are probably equal to the expansive views. Jazz on Sundays and late openings on weekends are the cherries on top.

More Pat Benatar than Justin Bieber, this is just the kind of heartbreaker you'll make excuses for. Dark and neon-lit, with jukebox and a pool table: it's pure dive bar, amped up with supreme service and libation from The Everleigh crew. Leave wine time and head straight for cocktails, craft and tap beers or spirits. With the bar open until 3am almost every night, there's plenty of time for heartbreak.

Embla's quiet confidence has hit a chord with gourmands and wine lovers across Melbourne. The wine bar's hat from the Good Food Guide says something about the culinary imagination of executive chef Dave Verheul and his team. The kitchen and bar are open all day, allowing plenty of opportunity to flick through the esoteric wine list and find the right pairing. Check out its new sibling restaurant, Lesa, upstairs.

Beneath the pedestrian bridge over the Yarra to Southbank you'll find a pop-up oasis of beer, coffee and tasty toasties. Clinging to the pylon, and decorated with old rope, this bar almost looks like it could be seaworthy. When the sun is shining there's no better place to be than on the island. Drink up me hearties, yo ho!
