Our apartment is ideally located for visiting Krka NP. It is only about 10 minutes drive from our place. It is one of the most beautiful croatian National parks, with spectacular waterfalls. If you love nature, we definitely suggest you to take at least 2 or 3 days for visiting it, it's really worth it! Within easy reach of Šibenik, Krka National Park is one of the great natural wonders in a national filled with them. Not quite as popular as Plitvice, another verdant paradise to which it is often compared, Krka has the considerable advantage of encouraging active participation, or at least, accommodating it. While plunging into the waters around Plitvice is strictly prohibited, Krka allows visitor to swim around Skradinski buk, the lagoon at the foot of a series of 17 dramatic waterfalls. So popular is the plunge that in 2017, the authorities had to limit admission numbers. Skradinski buk can also be admired from one of the boardwalks or from the comfort of an excursion boat that also takes in the equally impressive Roški slap waterfall further upstream, and Visovac, a 16th-century monastery set on its own island. In total, Krka National Park runs along the river it is named after for more than half of its 72.5-kilometre journey, allowing for any number of treks along its many trails, looking out for wolves, golden eagles, boar and peregrine falcons.  During the high season (july, august) Skradinski buk area can be quite overcrowded. To avoid crowds, we suggest you visit Skradinski buk early in the morning, exit the park before 11 A.M. and continue by visiting Roški slap, which is also amazing but much less crowded. Both areas are included in daily ticket price. For more info visit http://www.np-krka.hr/stranice/for-visitors/13/en.html

You enjoy long walks in the nature? Then you must go for a walk at the walking trail going all the long of st. Anthony channel. It is also suitable for bikes. The surrounding pine and oak forests provide the perfect amount of shade for a relaxing day at the beach and your relaxing hike. You will experience brethtaking views of the town of Sibenik from the sea side, the beauty of dalmatian karst, and at the end , view to the one of the most beautiful fortifications from the 16 century at the adriatic sea. Of course, all long the walking trail, there are public, or if you prefer, small, hiden beaches, where you can take a break and enjoy swimming. The stunning landscape of the Channel of St. Anthony, publicly protected since 1974, encompasses the area from the Šibenik Bridge to the Venetian Fortress of St. Nicholas and the surrounding sea. No one has yet passed through the Channel of St. Anthony without experiencing awe at this rare sight of beauty. The channel is just over 2000 m in length, 220 m in width and 40 m in depth. During earlier times the channel had strategic importance, so an iron chain was strung up from one side of the strait to the other to prevent enemy boats from entering Šibenik bay.

Šibenik is a hidden gem of croatian coast. Explore the old town, get a coffe like locals do (we'll share with you insider info of best places to drink and eat once you arrive in the appartment). Go swimming at the city beach Banj, and enjoy the most beautiful views from the sea! Most of all, this town is not overcrowded with tourists 😉 Šibenik is full of surprises. Around its attractive Old Town, historic churches and atmospheric squares are tucked around almost every corner, the golden globe atop the unmissable Cathedral of St James popping up in the distance when least expected. The busy seafront Riva, lined with bars and restaurants, is overlooked by the ancient network of crumbling fortresses atop the city, guarding the entrance to the Krka estuary that leads to the town from the sea. Founded on Christmas Day in 1066 by King Petar Krešimir IV, Šibenik is one of few coastal towns with a Croatian rather than Greco-Roman heritage. However, it was the long period of Venetian rule that left the deepest imprint, and most buildings in the centre, including the Cathedral of St James, date from this era.

For centuries, Croatians up and down the coast, and over on the islands, lived in fear of invasion from the Ottomans, who dominated the Balkan hinterland. Šibenik was defended by four fortresses, the most formidable being St Nicholas, Tvrđava Sv Nikole, which guards the narrow channel into the city from its vantage point on the islet of Ljuljevac. It was here, about half a century before the decisive sea battle of Lepanto of 1571, that locals begged their Venetian rulers to construct a fortification so impregnable no Turk would dream of coming near it. Having to clear a whole monastery, St Nicholas, to do so, the Venetians carried out the request to the letter, creating a citadel across the whole island. Never tested from that day to this, St Nicholas is a prime example of defensive architecture, one of six built by Venice recently designated as a collective UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the top of a steeply stepped street emerges at St Michael’s Fortress, connected to the patron saint of Šibenik. No-one can fail to be impressed by the view here, across the estuary to the surrounding islands. Its summer stage is the atmospheric setting for acts as diverse as Bryan Ferry, Róisín Murphy, Mario Gus Gus, Morcheeba, The National, Nouvelle Vague and Thievery Corporation - winning it the title of Croatian cultural attraction of the year in 2016. Renovated and reopened with a spectacular light show in 2016, Fort Barone was originally built in double-quick time during fears of Turkish invasion in the mid 1600s. The era is now captured and dramatised as part of the augmented reality system that walks visitors through the design, military planning and architecture of the day. Hiring AR glasses from the ticket office, you can let a local historian and an eye-witness account reveal what life was like under Ottoman siege, as was the case in 1646. The fortress now also features the Barone Bistro, a panoramic café-eaterie that puts local fare and wines to the fore, inventive seafood and meaty nibbles complemented by the lesser-known labels of regional wine producers.

The Medieval Mediterranean Gardens fills a prominent space around the former St Lawrence Monastery, on the edge of Šibenik’s historic centre. The plot had lain unkempt for centuries until landscaping expert Kiš and his team set to work, carefully planting medicinal herbs and plants in the shape of a cross, juxtaposed with the occasional fruit tree for colour. The end result is both practical – it’s also an educational resource, as local schoolchildren are regularly involved in maintaining it – as well as a relaxing tourist attraction, visitors following the pathways or spending a quiet ten minutes enjoying the peace and greenery on the patio. It operates year-round, hosting open-air events in summer.

Why not explore the islands? Take a ferry to Prvic island, get off at Prvic Luka, visit the memorial center of Faust Vrancic, the croatian inventer (16. century) of parachute. I know, I know, you must think, Leonardo da Vinci was the first inventor, but this humanist from Sibenik made first sketches of a parachute which is a predecessor of modern ones, and while Leonardo only draw one, Faust actually constructed it and jumped with! Yes, he survived. 😉 You will discover many of his inventions, and it is also very interesting for kids. And of course, there are beautiful beaches to complete your experience of Prvic island.

St. Francis monastery is the oldest monastery in Sibenik. Opened in 2015, the Museum of St Francis is named after the adjoining monastery that dates back to the 1300s, the imposing white building that dominates the far end of Šibenik’s main waterside promenade. It’s the kind of ecclesiastical landmark that would have a fusty old library only open to researchers of medieval history. Here, not a bit of it. Yes, it has a library, a most impressive one, filled with 10,000 volumes, including the priceless Šibenska molitva, one of the first known pieces of text in Croatian and Latin. But the museum also has interactive and audiovisual sections that bring the 700-year history of monastic activity to life, giving the visitor a vivid picture of the simple life serving God in the Middle Ages. Essential documentation has English translation. A lovely landscaped garden completes the picture.

Ever seen a falcon, eagle or other wild birds from very, very close? Well, this is your chance to experience it. The falconery center , which is close to our appartment, is a referral center for healing wild birds in Croatia. It is also very educational, and they have a great staff that will explain you everything you want to know. It is suitable for children. A ten-minute drive from Šibenik in the modest village of Dubrava, the Sokolarski Centar is a visitor attraction and place of education. Most of all, though, Sokolarski is a rescue centre, set up by Emilio Mendjušić, who has also tapped into the centuries-old tradition of falconry. Here hundreds of injured birds of prey are treated each year. By throwing this sanctuary open to the public, and gathering a team of some two-dozen falconers, Mendjušić both funds his healing mission and allows visitors to observe first-hand the tricks and training needed to master the noble art of falconry. The centre is open right up to November and then from March, usually welcoming groups of schoolchildren during the autumn and early spring, and tourists during the summer season. Visitors may spend the day here or sign up for a course to learn more about ornithology and bird protection.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND! Dear guests, in our Studio apartment Gray we strive to make your stay in Sibenik as enjoyable as possible. That's why we feel responsible to alert you of using ATMs during your stay. When possible, withdraw cash from bank-run ATMs located just outside that bank. Ideally use the machine during the bank's opening hours, so you can go inside for help if your card is munched. Bank ATMs usually do not charge usage fees and are generally more secure. Always use only ATMs connected to legitimate banks. Avoid "independent" ATMs, such as Travelex, Euronet, Moneybox, Your Cash, Cardpoint, and Cashzone. These have high fees and may try to trick users with "dynamic currency conversion." Note that these "independent" ATMs are often found next to bank ATMs in the hope that travelers will be too confused to notice the difference. Their mahcines may even have signs that scream "Free Cash Withdrawals" — don't believe it. These ATMs recognize foreign credit cards, they have an unfavorable conversion rate, large commissions, and allow you to pick up only large amounts of money. We hope you appreciate our advice.
