Sightseeing

One of the landmarks of Budapest and the "foyer" of Városliget, the Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) is found at the end of Andrássy út. The square was built for the millennial celebrations of 1896, to commemorate the first 1000 years of the Hungarian state. The two colonnades displaying 14 emblematic historical figures of Hungary form a semi-circle around an column, which is surrounded by the seven Magyar chieftains and topped by archangel Gabriel. The Heroes' Square is the most distinctive and most spacious square of Budapest. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle stand on its opposite sides.
