Mount Rose is the 3rd highest peak in Lake Tahoe. It is easy to drive to, but not so easy to climb. It is located next to, looking down and over Mt Rose ski resort, Reno/Sparks/Carson City/Washoe Valley and Lake Tahoe. Mount Rose is a challenging hike that can be done in about 4-6 hours by an average hiker. The trail initially takes you through forest, scrubland, beautiful meadows full of wildflowers and a waterfall. After falls, the trail climbs steeply upward toward more stark terrain and shale. Once you've made it to the top, you are over 10,778 feet and can see the entire Tahoe area. Destination: Difficulty Mileage: (One Way) 6 miles Elevation: 8700'/10778' Directions: Take Highway 431 (Mt. Rose Highway) north of Incline Village. Park at the trailhead located one mile south of the summit.

Emerald Bay State Park on the southwest area of Lake Tahoe is home to park is home to Eagle Falls and Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion that is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere. The views from any part of the Bay are fantastic. The park contains the only island in Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island where a small teahouse was built by the owner of the Vikingsholm Castle. The park is accessible by State Route 89 near the southwest shore of the lake. Emerald Bay is one of Lake Tahoe's most photographed and popular locations. In 1969, Emerald Bay was recognized as a National Natural Landmark by the federal Department of the Interior. In 1994, California State Parks included the surrounding water of the bay as a part of the park, making Emerald Bay one of the first underwater parks of its type in the state, protecting the various wrecks and other items on the bay's bottom. There are several camping areas in Emerald Bay including Eagle Point Campground, Bayview Campground and the boat-in campground on the West side of the bay. This beautiful lake north of Lake Tahoe is just a quick drive West of the small town of Truckee, California. This lake is great for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing and fishing. There are free public docks on the North side of the lake, a marina with fee parking on the West side and the Donner Lake Village Resort offers cabins and condos for rent. The resort is right on the water and the rooms run between $90 and $320 a night depending on the size and season. Parking can be tight during the height of summer, but you can park on the North side of the lake just off the edge of the road. There is a small beach at the West end of the lake where you can rent boats, kayaks and jetskis. There is a roped off area for children and plenty of parking. Donner Lake is much smaller than Tahoe and not as clear and blue. In the winter it has been known to freeze, but ice skating can be dangerous.

Biking around Lake Tahoe doesn't have just one place to ride a bike, but dozens of places where you can get a totally different biking experience. While the mountains around Tahoe are popular with mountain bikers, there are also plenty of bike paths in different areas around the lake. On the West Shore, you can ride from Tahoe City along the Truckee River and South Lake Tahoe offers a protected route from Stateline to Camp Richardson where you can stop at a few beaches or for ice cream. It will depend on your biking experience and where you are located, but the best way to learn about the variety of trails is to visit the Bike Tahoe website. They have excellent maps and links on where to rent bikes.

This destination unto itself sits on a mountain in Squaw Valley above Lake Tahoe. High Camp is accessed via the Squaw Valley Aerial Tram that travels 2,000 vertical feet, delivering visitors to a village that features the Olympic Museum, an ice skating rink, swimming pool and hot tub, restaurants, observation decks, and even provides entrance to skiing and tubing runs. During the summer, High Camp has its own set of high altitude hiking trails. About 5 million years ago, the valley that would become the Lake Tahoe basin sank into the earth's crust, causing mountains on all sides to rise. During this time, an erupting volcano blocked the outlet, for the run off water to rise hundreds of feet above the lakes current rim, and over thousands of years, the water eroded down to the current single outlet, the Truckee River. The Tahoe basin is mostly granite, with very little top soil, and therefore the very few necessary nutrients necessary for plants to grow have washed into the lake causing algae and other micro-organisms to live in the lake, making the water murky. Over 40% of the precipitation falling into the Tahoe Basin flows directly into the lake. Lake Tahoe located almost 50% in CA and 50% in NV, is fed by over 60 mountain fed streams including two hot springs. The Truckee River is the only outlet and flows from the dam in Tahoe City and end at Pyramid Lake, outside of Reno NV.

Nice place to stop in Tahoe City if you are looking to grab a glass of wine in the evening. Good selection/mix of wines. A nice wine bar where you can comfortable sit and taste 3 wines for $10. Surprisingly the menu is not dominated by Californian wines. The staff is always friendly and informative. They have some snacks such as a cheese plate, olives, almonds. There's even a small number of beers for those who may prefer it. Also a good place to stop in and pick up a bottle or two to take home. There are some reasonably priced wines there.

Fires have taken down the Truckee building that houses Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats three times, but nothing can quash its first-name hospitality and old-time charm. Moody’s has become one of my favorite restaurants in CA! Located inside of the old Truckee Hotel, dating back to the 1800’s and still full operational, Moody’s is the place that’s packed with locals year round. Excellent bar & food, with some items like their baby beet salad, steak tartare and pate that are off the hook! I especially enjoy their special barrel aged cocktails that are specially crafted! Awesome lakeside views & deck! Best rum runners aka Wet Woodies on North Shore. Pricey so we go mainly for drinks, apps and the view.

For breakfast, everyone heads to the friendly Fire Sign for down-home omelets, blueberry pancakes, eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, fresh made-from-scratch pastries and other carbo-loading bombs, plus organic coffee. In summer, hit the outdoor patio. Lines are usually very long, so get here early. Everything from sausages to Bloody Mary mix is made from scratch at this homey, rustic diner, a West Tahoe institution since 1978. Diners settle in for breakfast and lunch near the stone fireplace in the winter and on the shaded patio in the summer, and on busy mornings, they wait for tables while sipping coffee at the adjacent Annex.

Our local celebrity spot featured on the Food Network's show, "Throwdown with Bobby Flay." Across from the Amtrak station, this snug locals’ favorite dishes up breakfasts big enough to feed a lumberjack. Over 60 varieties of humongous omelets – along with burgers, burritos and big salads – are served in the funky space crammed with silly tchotchkes and colorful handwritten notes on the walls. Featuring almost every ingredient conceivable (including shrimp, avocado, and pesto), as well as standbys like bacon, onions, and cheese, many of the omelets are named after local regulars who invented them. Toast and potatoes are served with each eggy behemoth as well as the restaurants homemade salsa and sauces. Lunchtime sees soups, salads, and sandwiches, and dinner is available too, but folks agree that morning is the time to go.

This cute cottage is right by the Truckee River dam and Fanny Bridge; stash your bikes in the racks outside and walk inside for loaded breakfast burritos and egg sandwiches that are the draw at this unfussy cafe near Truckee River Dam, but locals and tourists also stop in for coffee drinks, smoothies, baked goods and lunchtime sandwiches. Inside are a few no-frills tables, and picnic tables and Adirondack chairs can be found out front in the summer months.

“Magnificent views” of the lake go on for miles at this “elegantly simple” Tahoe City “favorite” perched 100 feet above the water, with outdoor seating in the summer months and white linen–clad tables indoors; some prefer “the off-season when it's lower key”, but throughout the year a “friendly” staff serves a “beautifully prepared”, upscale Cal-French menu, and “wonderful” happy-hour discounts add to the “fantastic experience.” It's a small restaurant and reservations may be required during the high seasons, but the staff is friendly and very accommodating. They serve up a nice selection of wines by the glass and the bottle and the menu is small but it revolves around the changing seasons and the availability of fresh ingredients. The entrees include pork, lamb, seafood and pasta using fresh, local ingredients. For a starter the Caesar Salad is huge and very delicious and the various Ravioli dishes are a great entree. For dessert, try the Affogato with cranberry biscotti.

Wow! We love this place. Has that wonderful, cozy old Tahoe charm with a gorgeous Lake view. This is by far the most underrated restaurant on North Shore. One of the best steakhouses with exceptional service, family size portions especially salads and sides, great wine options and honestly, very reasonably priced for the quality and Tahoe prices. It’s where the locals go and it’s our family favorite.

Amazing location right on the bank of the Truckee River. In summer, we love their huge outdoor deck that has live music on weekends. Summer time is our favorite hang out and we enjoy their outdoor grill and drinks. It’s also the end point for the Truckee River rafters so sit back and giggle as the rafters try to get out of their rafts.
