I LOCO! Tasty/Intriguing Local Diners Drive-Ins, and Dives

Food scene

This listing features local establishments that might be considered by some to be a bit on the fringe but in my opinion can prepare some delicious food or libations served with some authentic "local" scenery. You will smile or maybe shake your head when you walk into some of these places. LOL!
Restaurant is called “Chiefs” ... You might like to venture out to the other cool St. Mary's county peninsula which includes our neighbors at Tall Timbers/Piney Point/St. George's Island. We frequent the very iconic WJ Dent & Sons in Tall Timbers to pick up a pound of this very unique preparation of ham known in these parts as "Stuffed Ham". While there are variations of the recipe depending where in the county you buy it, we find WJ Dent and Son's version very much to our liking. You can eat it on a sandwich (best on Wonder Bread), pack it in your omelet, throw it in your cream of potato soup. The deli is housed in what would remind you of a small quaint general store that has kept its wood floors and local character. Dent's stocks some basic grocery items, liquor/beer (local makes too). Its deli might be small by city standards but carries the essentials for you to prepare a delicious home cooked meal or enjoy a picnic lunch a bit further down the road near the bridge to St. George's island! We love their filet mignon and hamburger meat. We also like their chicken salad. The deli and store staff are always helpful and polite. This place has made COVID19 bearable! Great price on Crane label wine...cheers!

This is a LOCO place to eat that keeps it very real, unpretentious, and a bit on the fringe of hospitality. True seaman grit might come to mind if you get to meet the owner Tommy Courtney who will sometimes double as wait staff or simply as a curious proprietor who will stroll by the table to check on your eating enjoyment level. You can ask him just about anything. That aside, this man knows these waters real good and his wife Julie can seriously make a memorable fried fish sandwich or dinner!!! You will see your fellow vacationers, businessmen/women, families, farmers, fishermen, construction workers all bellied up for a most delicious "epicurean" experience. Often will will come home with a story. It's on Smith Creek about a 10 min drive south of St. Mary's City.
