At over 1,000 acres, it encompasses a wide assortment of picnic areas, playgrounds, and lakes, as well as trails for hiking and biking. Set up a picnic, let the kids run around a bit, or maybe go for a quick family hike. This massive green space with an abundance of fresh air is only 3.5 miles north of Parkmerced.

In addition, canoes and rowboats are available for rental; spending a few hours—or even the whole day—out on the water is always an option.

Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse in the Western United States but became a federal penitentiary from 1934-1963, housing famous convicts such as Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Now, this once infamous prison island is part of the Bay Area’s 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Located one-and-a-half miles from Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz is one of the city's most popular attractions. A visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived.
