New Zealand’s first capital city, Russell is full of historic buildings, charming shops and great restaurants. Many of the cruise and activity options for the Bay of Islands start here, but if you’re short on time, sit on the beach in the shade of a stately Pohutakawa tree.
Drive to Paihia and catch the passenger ferry and walk the quaint streets, everything is close.
If you prefer explore by car, take the Opua/Russell car ferry, then you can pop over the hill at Russell to enjoy stunning Long Beach for a swim in crystal waters

Check out waterfualls , Wharepuke and Rainbow Falls, as well as some old hydro-dams and the historic Kemp House and Stone Store. At a leisurely pace, you'll be walking 1.5 hours (oneway) through bird-filled native forest. Start your walk from either the Stone Store or from Rainbow Falls.
