Parks and Nature

Here’s a few of our favorite spots for animal lovers, nature enthusiasts and those guests who are looking for opportunities to get outside and enjoy the beautiful San Diego weather. We rarely have bad days! May and June are the chilliest months, and August is our hottest.

For all of you flower lovers and family-friendly seekers, stop at the Botanical Building during your trip to Balboa Park. It’s free, shaded, near the main museums and a coffee shop and a great place to people watch. Spend a day having a picnic and exploring the park! There is plenty of parking, but you can also walk to the park in about 20 minutes or take an Uber for about $7 and get there in less than 10.

This is one of our most recommended family-friendly spots. There’s an underground parking garage, a large splash park for children, plenty of space to spread out and run around. It’s by Seaport Village, the Maritime Myseum, the Gaslamp Quarter and all of the other downtown attractions.

Head downtown for a big list of our recommended spots. The Embarcadero, near Seaport Village, the Maritime Museum and the Convention Center, is a lovely spot to enjoy a morning walk and coffee, sit by the bay and read a book or take your puppy on a walk. You get a beautiful skyline view of Coronado and the water. There’s shopping and dining, buskers and couples having romantic picnics. It’s a fun combination of locals and tourists, and it’s a good spot for families.

The Orange Line

Walk less than half a block south of the Airbnb to access San Diego’s convenient Orange Trolley line. They’re fun, they’re cheap and they’re so close. At $2.50 per ride, it’s far less than an Uber (which are also reasonable to most places from the house). Travel west to get to the convention center in less than 10 minutes. It will even take you out to Fashion Valley if you switch to the green line. That’s a bit more ambitious, but have fun! You can do it! We believe in you. By the way, fashionistas will appreciate the mix of high-end stores there like Scotch & Soda, Gucci and Prada. Good luck!

Salt & Straw Ice Cream

This trendy place with several locations in the Southwest is located right in Little Italy. They stock your basic flavors, but they love trying kooky combinations. They make amazing sundaes! They’re always fantastic. After dinner, you can get your ice cream and walk across the street to the piazza, people watch, grab a beer at the Little Italy food hall.

Pop Pie Co.

Who doesn’t love pie?! We sure love it. This place is a staple for us. You can get both savory and sweet pies, coffee and teas (their London Fog is fantastic) and their sister company, Stella Jean’s Ice Cream is their next door neighbor. We love the steak and ale pie.

Bakery on 26th and Imperial

Check out this little place by Tularosa Casa de Arte (our business!). It’s a fantastic locally-owned shop that churns our fresh cookies and other goods every day. We love the bread pudding for less than a dollar and love picking a dessert from the cabinets filled with different types of treats.
