Sightseeing

Mammoth Lakes has dozens and miles of gorgeous hiking trails, walks, bike paths and natural wonders to explore. Yosemite National Park is easily accessible, as are Mono Lake and June Lake. The Lakes Basin Bike Path is outside your front door as Hidden Valley complex is on the Mammoth Lakes bike path system.
There is an absolutely stunning five mile loop trail from the far end of Saddlebag Lake. During the summer, take a boat ride to the trailhead. In the Fall, enjoy the beautiful hike around Saddlebag to reach the trailhead. Saddlebag Lake is at the top of Tioga Pass, just before the entrance into Yosemite National Park.

Crystal Lake is a 1 1/4 mile hike from the Lake George Campground in the Lakes Basin. It is worth every step of the way! If you want to be adventurous on a hot summer day, take a bathing suit and try a dip. There is an island you can swim out to. :)

The trailhead for Skelton Lake is in Coldwater Campground in the Lakes Basin. The forest trail leads to Duck Pass and on to the Valentine Lakes. Skelton Lake is a must see about 2 miles up. You do not need a car for this hike. You can catch the Trolley from home, ride up, hike, and catch the Trolley back. You can even stop at the Lakefront Resort Lodge for a bite in the beautiful rustic lodge and continue your journey.

The Lakes Basin Bike Path that starts outside our complex ends at Horseshoe Lake. Walk, run or bike to the lake. Or better yet, take a free Trolley from The Village (3-5 minute bike ride from our condo), load your bike on the Trolley and enjoy a magnificent ride down the hill to home - next to gorgeous mountain lakes and views. There is a bike or walking path around Horseshoe Lake that is very much worth the trip. If you are looking for a swim spot, you can swim in Horseshoe Lake, or take a short hike up to McLeod Lake.

Canyon Lodge is where our free ski locker is located (Winter only - of course). Walk to the Village Gondola in your comfortable shoes . Take a scenic ride on the Gondola to Canyon Lodge. Pull your gear out of your locker and catch the lifts. If you are a skier who needs ski lessons - ask for Andrzej Kosmala. He is the best! ... and yes, I am a bit biased. :) But, it's true. Of course, if you do not ski or ride, you can take the (free) Gondola from the Village to Canyon Lodge and enjoy the ambiance, views and great food. P.S. Please do not bring your skiis or board into our condo. Please deposit them in the Canyon Lodge ski locker upon arrival.

Rainbow Falls is the Red's Meadow area. For keen hikers, you can hike there from the Lakes Basin. For the rest of us, take a bus from the Village (or drive during slower seasons) and enjoy Mammoth's largest waterfall. The loop that includes the Devil's Postpile is worth it.

There are many places around to soak in natural hot springs. In the summer, enjoy a soak any time. In the winter, hike through the snow, undress and climb into warm water. The bigger problem is when you get out. It is worth it, though. Just do not bring our condo towels to the hot springs. It will cost you! The mud does not come out. Our favorite is Wild Willy's Hot Springs Directions - From US 395, take Benton Crossing Road (also known as Green Church Road). Travel east about 2.5 miles until you cross two cattle guards. Turn right just past the second cattle guard and follow the road, always taking the left fork whenever there's a choice. About a mile down, you'll reach a parking area where there's a sign and wooden boardwalk that leads about 200 yards away to the pools. Check out https://www.monocounty.org/places-to-go/hot-springs/ It has directions to many special sites.

The Lakes Basin bike path is outside your door. Explore the many, many miles of biking and walking trails in Mammoth. Here is a link to Mammoth's biking - and hiking - trails. https://www.mammothtrails.org Our favorite is to bike to the Trolley stop in the Village. Take the Trolley all the way to Horseshoe Lake. Get off with your bicycle. Bike around Horseshoe Lake and head down on the bike path. You can take a beautiful spin around Lake Mary or to Lake George - or just ride your brakes on the way down the mountain on your forest bike trail. When you get to our complex, you can take Hidden Valley Road to an empty lot. Cross the lot. On the far end there is a bike path that takes you around the golf course. But, when you get to the Eagle Lodge turnoff to the right, take it. Cross the Eagle Lodge parking lot and continue on the bike path behind the condos. It will take you down through the Valentine Reserve. When you get to the Snowcreek turnoff, keep right to Old Mammoth Road. Follow the bike path along Old Mammoth Road until it crosses under the road and heads out to the meadows. You can keep going all the way and circle back on the bike path that goes through town - back to Hidden Valley 106. It is good exercise but worth it. It is called the Lakes Basin Bike Path. You can bike it. You can walk it. Or, you can run it. All of the options are perfect! See which one you like best.

The June Lake loop is a remarkably scenic drive - every season of the year. It is a loop north of Mammoth that starts and ends on the 395. Visit the many lakes along your way, grab a hike, do some skiing/boarding at June Mountain, dip a toe and enjoy the real sand beach on June Lake, stop at the Spa. There is something for everyone, young and old. P.S. From our condo, you drive by the Village and take the Mammoth Scenic Loop to 395.

You can see a portion of the Sherwin Lakes trail from the kitchen and living room of our condo. The lakes are beautiful and it is fun to look back from the trail toward the Condo - in the far distance, of course. The fall colors are very special! ... just don't try to hike it in the winter. It is full of snow! In the Winter, there is sledding walking distance from our Condo. That is a much better idea.

If you are looking for Fall colors, this should be on the top of your list. The drive is magnificent. The hike from the end of the road is even better. And, on an interesting note, the Lundy Lake trail connects to the Saddlebag Lake loop trail. There is a Pass to cross in between.

The Panorama Dome trail off of Lake Mary Road is a short way to acquire an extraordinary view. You can walk or run from our condo up the Lakes Basin Bike Path to Panorama Dome. You can drive up to Twin Lakes and walk from there - both Summer and Winter. Or, you can get there from Old Mammoth Road - both Summer and Winter. Try a moonlight snowshoe hike to Panorama Dome ... and then warm up at the Lakefront Lodge over a game of chess and something warm to drink.

You might wonder why I recommend a Mobil gas station. I wondered the same thing when a local told me we should eat there. They were right!! You have to see it to believe. Enjoy the sweeping views of Mono Lake from your table - and gourmet food.

My go to special place. This rustic lodge with a delicious French Restaurant and extremely cozy great room is worth visiting - every season. Try a spiked warm drink by the roaring fire. Better yet, first go cross country skiing or snowshoeing, then try that warm drink or chili. When you want to splurge, the Lakefront Restaurant is the way to go. It is excellent. And, the Lakefront is accessible by Trolley, which starts just around the corner from your front door. Well, maybe a couple of corners, but very close.

As far as I am concerned, we have the best of all worlds. We are very near to The Village so it is easily accessible. Yet, we are across Lake Mary Rd. from the Village so when you are done with your entertainment, restaurants, shops, skiing, riding, biking, gondola ride, trolley ride ... you can walk home to a serene mountain environment and peacefully work, rest, relax and enjoy the forest outside your front door.

Schat's is amazing and a Mammoth institution. You can not go wrong with anything there. Schat's combined with our Kitchen Aid automatic four slice toaster is a special treat. Buy some bread and drop it into our Kitchen Aid automatic four slice toaster. Kids love watching the bread automatically disappear and reappear perfectly toasted. Adults love it no less than kids. You never realized a toaster could be so much fun! And the toast it produces rocks!
