The Donauinsel is a huge park. You can swim, bike, jog, go to beaches, cafés etc. There are no cars. Check out the different areas here: wien.gv. at/umwelt/gewaesser/donauinsel/ From your appartment the fastest way to get to the Donauinsel would be to take the metro line U1. I recommend renting a bike, which is also possible at the Donauinsel itself.

Iconic and huge swimming area with lots of cafes and restaurants. There are calm and busy areas alike. Cheap entrance fee (7€ for adults, much less for teens, kids and toddlers). That's where the locals go on hot days.

Take the U1 to "Alte Donau". There you can rent a boat (electro or pedal) and discover the area. I recommend taking a boat with a slide :)

Huge amusement park. It's free. Go during weekdays and in the late morning if you want to avoid big crowds - especially during summer holidays. Go on weekends in the evening if you want to float with the big crowd.

Urban Development

Vienna is known for it's - comperatively - low appartment fees. There's a lot of community housing. But the prices are rising here, too, especially on the private market. If you're interested in past and present urban development, take a look at these places.
One of the biggest housing projects in Europe: A new "city" that has been built at the border of Vienna. It even has it's own lake. You can reach it via the metro line U2. It's still developing and worth a trip if you are interested in urban development.

One example of big community housing, built during the time of "Red Vienna", a unique socio-political experiment in the 1920s and 1930s, before fascism. There's a small museum and guiding tours, it's an insider's tip. Check out the website for opening hours or for making an appointment. dasrotewien-waschsalon. at /english

Famous community housing project with swimming pools on top. The New York Times called it "The renters' Utopia". But it's worth looking behind the surface. Check out the film "27 Storeys - Wohnpark Alterlaa", it will be in cinemas during summer months.

A neighborhood just around the corner. Since 2006 and until 2026 the city and private developers are building a new "city in the city" for 40.000 people. There are primarily young families living here.
