Mount Shasta Resort’s 6,035-yard par 70, 18-hole course opened in the summer of 1993. Located in Siskiyou County, California, the spectacular demanding layout was designed by Jim Summers and Sandy Tatum at an elevation of 3,500 feet above sea level. The course features natural alpine terrain, undulated greens, and breathtaking views. The holes are uniquely different with three sets of tees and yardages. You may also see a wide variety of wildlife on the course. The facility is open to the public, with a limited membership available. You may choose to walk or rent an electric cart. Tee times are available one week in advance. Overnight guests can book tee times at the same time they make their lodging reservations. Since we do experience all four seasons in Mount Shasta, the weather and rates will change. “Our golf course is challenging and scenic without being overly long. Every golfer has some favorite courses they like to play. The reason they prefer one facility over another is dependent on their experience. If the overall experience is good, then our course will become a ‘favorite’. I could play golf here everyday and never get tired of it.” Rod Sims, Head Golf Pro 1000 Siskiyou Lake Boulevard Mount Shasta, CA, USA (800) 958-3363

Mount Eddy is the highest mountain in the Eddys (a subrange of the Klamath Mountains), the highest point in Trinity County, and interestingly enough, the highest mountain W of Interstate 5. It is by far the highest peak in the region… except for one Mount Shasta (a mere 5,000-something ft. higher), which lies just across the valley. Mt. Eddy was named after Olive Paddock Eddy, the first woman to climb Mt. Shasta. Mount Eddy’s biggest attributes are its relative solitude (at least compared with Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak), beautiful surroundings, a relatively painless route up a majestic peak (the standard trail is 9.4 miles round-trip, has 2,850 ft. elevation gain, & is class 1), and perhaps most notably the amazing views, particularly the neck-bending ones of mighty Mt. Shasta. Photo Credit: Summit Post – Mt. Eddy (diggler) (530) 926-4511 (Mount Shasta Ranger Station)

This north-facing cirque has easy access to North, West, and East-facing aspects allowing skiable terrain to be found in most snow conditions. When the lake is frozen, which is much of the winter, it is very easy to do laps that start and end at your car with the ability of doing over 1000 vertical feet in one run! The wide variety of terrain also means that there is almost always avalanche danger in the area. Photo Credit: Discover Siskiyou (530) 926-4511 (Mount Shasta Ranger Station)

A short, easy 1.5 mile trail that stays close to the rim of the Sacramento River’s Box Canyon. The trail has many things to recommend it. First, it is a scenic trail that has interesting routing and offers several vistas down into the canyon. Second, it is an easy trail. At just over a mile, it is short and level, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon excursion. Third, the trail has fascinating historical artifacts, namely an old car and appliance graveyard where the aforementioned items, dating back to the 30’s, are piled up along the trail. Lastly, the Box Canyon Trail includes a spur that offers an exciting descent to the bottom of the canyon, next to the river. Black Butte, the largest of Mount Shasta’s satellite volcanic peaks, is itself an iconic image of the Mount Shasta area. Situated at the north end of the Strawberry Valley, the nearly perfectly conical peak is visible from almost everywhere in the Mount Shasta area. When driving north on I-5 from Mount Shasta City, Black Butte rises directly over the interstate and it seems that the freeway is destined to run right into the peak’s rocky base. Only a quick jog to the left prevents this from happening but the freeway comes within such close quarters to the base of the peak that it is easy to make out numerous interesting observations about Black Butte while just passing by at high speed in a car. Only a quick jog to the left prevents this from happening but the freeway comes within such close quarters to the base of the peak that it is easy to make out numerous interesting observations about Black Butte while just passing by at high speed in a car. Category: Medium Distance: 4.9 miles Elevation Gain: 1,827 feet Route Type: Out & Back Directions: From 1-5 N, take exit 738 toward Central Mt. Shasta. Turn right onto W Lake St. Continue straight to stay on W Lake St. Take a slight left onto N Washington Dr. Continue straight for 2.2 miles onto County Hwy A10/N Washington Dr. Turn left onto Black Butte Trail. Then turn right toward 41N18 Rd. Highlights: Scenic views of Mt. Shasta, easily accessible from highway Photo Credit: Hike Mt. The Spring Hill Trail is one of the trails most conveniently located to Mount Shasta City. Spring Hill is visible from most of town, a seemingly younger sibling to conical Black Butte and might Mount Shasta. Although the small butte is easily viewed, many do not know that a trail now winds its way to the summit, offering great views along the way. Looking at Spring Hill, one would not expect a long trail to reach the summit. Surprisingly, the trail is almost three miles long, though it is not very steep. The length is a result of the long, lazy switchbacks that are used to lessen the trail’s grade. Distance: 2.7 miles Elevation Gain: 682 feet Route Type: Loop Directions: From 1-5 N, Take exit 738, W Lake St. In 1.6 miles, take N Mt. Shasta Blvd to Rd No 2M16. Trailhead will be on the right. Highlights: Great forestry, dog accessible Photo Credit: Hike Mt. Shasta – Spring Hill Trail (Bubba Suess)

Stroll the boardwalk in the heart of Mt. Shasta. Enjoy views, open space, wildlife Sisson Meadow offers incredible views of the area with a gorgeous view of Mt. Shasta, the Eddy Mountains, Black Butte, Spring Hill and Castle Crags. Picnic tables and several benches in the meadow offer spots to enjoy the views, the quiet, the wetland habitat and the wildlife. Spring time brings Mallard ducks and Canada geese to the pond where you might see goslings. Late spring is also the time to look for the beautiful bog orchid. Through spring and summer a number of fruit trees, wildflowers and roses bring blossoms to the 7.5-acre meadow. Hawk weed, alsike clover, white Dutch clover, monkey flower, western yarrow, wooly mullen, field mint, blue lupine and yellow monkey flower are some what you’ll find. The restoration of Sisson Meadow began in 2003 after Siskiyou Land Trust purchased the property to protect it from development. Up until 1960, the meadow was grazed by cattle. Restoration work has included removing invasive plant species and restoring wetland function. Stewardship continues with annual spring and fall work days. Community members, school children and visitors enjoy Sisson Meadow year round. We invite you to take a stroll and spend some time enjoying nature. Easily accessible from downtown The main boardwalk can be easily accessed from downtown by walking three blocks up Castle Street, heading towards the mountain and the pond. Just beyond the pond, the boardwalk connects with the Rotary Trail that crosses the upper edge of the meadow between Alma and Lake Streets. These trails connect to Mt. Shasta Library, Sisson School and the Garden Greenway across Alma Street. The southern boardwalk goes to the creek with sitting stones near the Alder Street entrance. Although short, the Trinity Divide’s Heart Lake Trail is a titan when in terms of scenery and vistas. Few trails offer as much alpine terrain and tremendous vistas for such little effort. Beginning at the Castle Lake trailhead, a worthy destination in its own right, the trail climbs to a craggy bench high atop massive Castle Lake. There, nestled into the rocky cliffs hundreds of feet above Castle Lake is small Heart Lake. Though diminutive in size, the lake offers one of the finest views of mighty Mount Shasta. Category: Moderate Distance: 2,0 miles Elevation Gain: 721 feet Route Type: Out & Back Directions: Follow signs to Castle Lake from the town of Mt Shasta. From Central Mt Shasta go west on Lake St, turn south on S Old Stage, Veer right at WA Barr Rd, cross Box Canyon Dam (Lake Siskiyou), turn left on the Castle Lake road shortly after the dam and follow the pavement to its end at Castle Lake. Highlights: Beautiful wild flowers when in season, views of Heart and Castle lakes

Named the Gateway Trail because it offers access to the forest from town, the shared-use trail is open to mountain bikers, hikers, runners, dog walkers, and equestrians. The Trailhead and parking lot are nine-tenths of a mile past the Mount Shasta High School on the right of Everett Memorial Highway. Curving up the lower flank of Mount Shasta through open brush fields and conifer plantations, offering superb views of the Eddys, Castle Crags, Black Butte, and Mount Shasta, the Gateway Trail interconnects with other trails and roads providing about 10 miles of single-track and 10 miles of dirt roads for one to five hours of riding depending on route selection and ability.

The Ney Springs Canyon Trail is in fact an old dirt road. The fact that the road can still be driven on should not discourage hikers from travelling the route on foot. In truth, the road is quickly becoming a trail as it degrades more and more each year. Moreover, it would not be a pleasant or easy drive for low clearance vehicles. Now, having gotten the nitty-gritty out of the way, what does this old road offer? It enters into a densely forested canyon through which raucous Ney Springs Creek crashes over boulders and small cataracts.
