Neighborhoods

If you have rented a car, you can exit the south entrance to Corosol, which is closest to the city of Playa del Carmen. Be careful as many streets are one-way and not clearly marked. Also be aware that many intersections do not have stop signs. In general the Avenues (10th, 15th, 20th etc.) have right-of-way. If it is unmarked, the driver on the right has the right-of-way. If you have an accident, stay and wait for police who will help you negotiate who is at fault, and agreed payment. If you are in a rented car, you will have a number on your rental agreement that you are to call. The speed bumps are extreme, so really slow down for them. The speed tables are also pedestrian crossings, so give them right away if they are walking across one. If you are taking taxis, you can get a taxi at the concierge/front desk of Mareazul, or have the concierge call one to your unit. The front desk communicates best by “What’s App”. Their number is +52 984 593 3479. Identify your name and unit number when first reaching out to them. If you like to walk, you can take a relaxing stroll and stay within the Corosol Resort area. It is about a mile +/- to walk back to the north entrance where you entered, and is quite beautifully groomed. You can check out some of the other resorts in the area, but won’t be allowed to go inside the “all inclusive” properties. You can stop in at the golf course and get a bite to eat at their grill, or make a tee time. If you would like to walk into Playa del Carmen, you will want to walk out of the south entrance, and make your first left on 5th avenue. You will pass by some undeveloped land, then pass by the Paradisis Resort, then see a lot of residential and small businesses like convenience stores and such. It seems run down, but we have found it to be very safe during our daytime walks. It will be about 1.5 miles before you reach the north end of the infamous “5th Avenue” of Playa. This is where you will find all of the great shopping, entertainment and restaurants. Most of 5th Avenue allows only foot traffic, although you can ride a bicycle to the start of the main shopping district. By the way, we have seen bicycle rental shops, but have never rented one. The north/south streets in Playa are called “Avenues” and they are bigger streets, usually with multiple lanes. They are in increments of 5 (5th, 10th, 15th, and so on). The east/west streets are called “Calles” (pronounced ki-yay) are generally smaller, most of which are one-way. They are in increments of 2. The south entrance of Corosol (nearest Mareazul) is located at Avenue Pintores (which is approximately 120N Calle) and 5th Avenue. Fifth Avenue runs all the way south down to zero (which is called Avenue Benito Juarez), and then starts numbering up, but the street numbers are “south” and odd numbers (e.g. Calle 1 South, 3 South, and so on). Some of the east/west streets are larger, and have actual names rather than numbers, like Avenue Pintores (approx 120th), or Avenue Constituyentes (between 18th & 20th), or Avenue Benito Juarez (0 - between 2N and 1S). Once you are down in the 5th avenue area (pedestrians only), you should enjoy the shopping, dining and entertainment. The brand name retail stores (e.g Starbucks, Zara, Nike, Forever 21, etc) do not negotiate their prices. However, the smaller individually owned stores, as well as the jewelry stores are always negotiable on price. Many of the items you’ll see at one store will also be at another store a block away, so if you’re not happy with your price, just tell them you’ll think about it, and they may lower the price, or you can go back later and get what you want. Fun activities for kids are getting hair braided with beads, soaking their feet in the fish tanks spas, or taking pictures with many of the street performers and mimes. Be sure to carry small change for tip money (US coins and dollar bills are acceptable). Brand name stores happily take credit which is generally your best exchange rate. However, some of the smaller stores and street vendors will want cash, and will negotiate in either dollars or pesos. If you want to carry some pesos, but don’t have any, go to 10th Avenue (one block to the west) and there is a money exchange about every block or two. Check out a couple of them for pricing. Generally they are all pretty similar and exchange at their posted rate with no added commission. These rates are usually much better than what you see at the airport. If you have a car, you can usually find parking on Calles, or in private parking lots. If you park on the street, there are green parking ticket stations (about 1 station per block). You walk to the station, enter the license plate of your car, put in pesos (coins), or use a credit card. It is much more convenient to have coins to use. It’s usually about 20 pesos (about $1) for and hour or two. You receive a ticket which you will need to go back and put on the dash of your car facing up with the time of expiration. Do not park in “no E” (E with a circle around it and slash through it). That is no parking zone. If you are ticketed, they will usually take your front license plate, and you have to go to the police office to pay the fine and get your license plate back. It is very expensive if you return your rental car without the license. If you’d like an inexpensive massage “off property”, take a walk on the beach going north. As you reach the first resort, Royal Haciendas, you will probably meet independent massage therapists selling services right away. If you don’t see one, keep walking and just past the RH, and just off the beach, you will see a small open hut with 4-6 massage tables on a platform. The price is usually around $40+tip for a 60 minute massage. Our experiences have been really good.

Food scene

Best Italian food we’ve ever had!.... anywhere, hands down. Start with their specialty appetizer Seafood Gratin (not sure the name), which is a lot of fresh shellfish baked in a tomato sauce. Their warm pear salad is excellent, as are other salads. Order anything in the homemade pasta section, strozzapreti, tortellini, ravioli, wonderful. Pizza may be in the name, but the pastas are what make them so good. Wine choices from Chili are excellent and reasonable. If you want to eat later or have a large party, make a reservation.

Cheap street tacos and great margaritas and pina coladas. This is really low key and casual. There are several in town, but our favorite location is the one at 30th Ave and Calle 32N. It’s small, covered, but outdoor-like dining. Our favorites are the guacamole, Tacos El Pastor (sliced off the post roasting by the street), Choriso Tacos con queso, or 2 people can share a giant taco stuffed with all their best meats called Taco Loco. Also try a small order of charro beans (almost like bean soup). So yummy, kid friendly and inexpensive.

We have not had great luck with the fancy restaurants on 5th Avenue, which seem to be overpriced and not the quality and service one would expect. However, one restaurant we have really enjoyed is called Sonora Grill which is on 5th Avenue and 12th Calle (NE corner). This beautiful bar/restaurant has a large outdoor seating area with excellent music, lights and videos to create an incredible atmosphere. Their mixologist will make cocktails to order at your table. If you like smoky flavors, try something with Mezcal. They have really pricey steaks, but one specialty is their hamburger Wellington that is encased in bread dough, and they inject it with melted cheese at your table. Their appetizers are great, and they have a selection of 6-8 tasty sauces to dip chips into that are complimentary.

Located on Calle 14 Biz North between 10th and 15th Avenues, this is a very small and fancy restaurant with international cuisine. This is gourmet at its best. Prepare for a long relaxing meal with excellent service, meal presentation, and wines to go with it. You MUST have a reservation and it usually must be made well in advance. +52 984 127 4844. This is the best sushi we could find (so far). Being on the ocean, we thought there would be more and better offerings. If you are wanting an option that isn’t all “rolls made with too much cream cheese”, than this might be your best bet. Let us know if you find something better. Cenotes are pools of freshwater that are usually formed in caverns with stalagmites and/or stalagtites, but they have been discovered by uncovering the cavern from the top. Some cenotes are completely exposed and are beautiful clear pools great for swimming, or relaxing. Others are still inside a cave which you enter by climbing down stairs or ladders. You can swim in them, and some have diving/jumping platforms. We have visited some closeby, and we visited 3 different cenotes on a tour nearby when we visited the Coba ruins. Cenotes are very unique to Mexico and this area. We highly recommend you find one or more to visit. This is one we have gone to, but you can explore lots of options nearby.

You can see the island of Cozumel from our deck every day, and on a clear night, you can see its lights glowing across the water. Cozumel is a different experience, shopping, etc. that you might want to see while you are here. Even the ferry ride across is part of the adventure. You can catch the ferry at various times from downtown Playa. A ferry leaves about every hour starting as early as 7am, and the last one comes back to Playa leaving as late as 10pm. The fares are approximately $10-$12 US each way.

Groceries & Supplies

This is the nicest grocery store we’ve found with good produce and meat selections, fresh bakery, wine/liquor, and general supplies. It’s not all inclusive, but you can pretty much find everything you’re looking for. You have a much better chance finding help if you don’t speak Spanish, but you can get around any store if you take your phone with a translation app or website. The nearest Chedraui is only about 2 miles from Mareazul and most convenient to go to. There is another store in Playa that is even larger, but both stores are great. Take shopping bags from the utility closet (or buy new one’s there) as they don’t supply plastic or paper bags.

Health Services

We have had extensive dental work completed while staying in Playa. We found this practice by recommendation from other residents and had such a good experience, we have planned some of our trips around getting work done here. The practice is accommodating and excellent English-speakers. Their education and training is above and beyond, and their equipment and tools are extremely high tech. My family members have had extractions, crowns, root canals, and dental implants done here, as well as regular cleaning and x-rays. We have found that the prices are 50-60% less expensive than similar services in our home city in the USA. We highly recommend them.
