If Bangkok is a city where East greets West, then Khao San Road is the scene of their collision, the place where they jostle for superiority and ole one another in the eye. With travelers from every corner of the modern world, sleek clubs playing sophisticated sounds, eclectic market stalls, converted VW cocktail bars, and foods tamed to suit the Western plate, it may seem clear who won the fight. However, whether you're a had-up farang(foreigner) or open-minded Thai, its irrepressible energy and carefree vibe makes it well worth a visit.

The cheesy name doesn't do justice to this surprisingly sophisticated Thai restaurant located in a former warehouse by the river. Join Bangkok's beautiful crowd for antiquated Thai dishes such as cubes of watermelon served with a dry 'dressing' of fish, sugar and deep-fried shallots, or fragrant green curry with pork and fresh bird's-eye chili.

Thailand's 'Wall Street' is by day a place of financial institutions, law firms and multinational corporation. By night however, Silom slips out of its suit, transforming into a bustling shopping street and frenetically paced hedonist's playground. Alongside a cramped but creatively stock night market (think bootleg DVDs, tourist trinkets, fake watches), sit some of city's most renewed and raucous streets, namely red light district Patpong, Soi 2 and Soi 4.

Jim Thompson's three decades of dedication to the revival of Thai silk, then a dying art, changed the the industry forever. After he mysteriously disappeared into jungles of Malaysia, he left a legacy behind, which is reflected through his vast collections of Thai art and antiques now on display at the Jim Thompson's House and Museum, itself a lovely complex of six Thai-style teakwood houses preserved to their original glory.
