Tumalo Mountain is an easy 4 mile round trip trail with spectacular views of the Three Sisters, Broken Top and Mt. Bachelor. Because it is relatively easy, and with its close proximity to Bend, this hike extremely popular not only in the summer season, but also in the winter season when folks head up on a clear day with their skis or snowshoes. This mountain has one of the best views in Central Oregon that easily accessible. Visitbend.com describes The Tumalo Mountain hike as follows “ Tumalo Mountain is a shield volcano in the Cascade Range of Central Oregon, located just northeast of Mount Bachelor across the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. Ice Age glaciers carved a large cirque into the northeast flank of the mountain, producing a bowl which is popular with local backcountry skiers. Dogs are allowed on Tumalo Mountain Trail during the summer months but must be on leash. The area is closed to dogs November 1 – May 1. A Sno-Park pass is required for parking November 30 – April 30.” We did this hike recently, although described as “easy”, it’s uphill and can be a challenge if you are not physically or mentally prepared. The views at the top were amazing as described and we chose this hike as an alternate to a flatter hike I could not get permits to. It was an awesome activity and a great work out. Just know before hand, it’s not exactly that easy for most!
