The stunning views - particularly as the sun sets. This is about 20 minute drive out of Calvi. You need to drive along Boulevard Wilson towards the citadelle and keep heading out of Calvi (ie opposite direction from the airport). Just keep driving along the coast road for around 20 minutes heading towards Galeria. It’s right down in a bay and on your right when you’re heading out of Calvi. It is signed. I do recommend that you book this before you go. They will advise the best time to arrive to catch the breathtaking sunsets.

Parks & Nature

The forest is a national park a short distance from Calvi. Turn right on to the D81 (airport road) out of Calvi. Goats and cows often graze on the side of the road too! Take care as you climb to the forest. As you reach the car park entrance you will find in season that you will have to pay for parking (under 10 Euros). You will also be given a leaflet showing the walks. The walks are well way-marked but I would recommend you take IGN maps too. It’s also possible to paddle/sunbathe down by the river – remember the water has just come down from the mountains though! The scenery is ‘Tolkeinesque’ and truly amazing in the forest.

There's a ruined village above Lumio which is worth hiking up to. There are signs from the car park by the Hotel Chez Charles. The views from the top are well worth the 45 minute climb! The trail then continues upwards and along the shoulder of a hill to drop down in to the next valley and then back down into Lumio.

You will see several footpaths leading off down the hillside towards the beach and the Etang (lagoon) stretching back from the beach. Take one of these and head across the beach at the bottom. The coastal path starts at the far end of the beach. This is another walk that is essentially a there and back walk and depends how far you want to walk. You could walk all the way to St Florent but that would take a couple of days or so!! There are a couple of small beaches where you can rest and swim, if you are feeling energetic after about 2.5 hours you can descend to a tiny beach called Cala di a Recisa and swim from here before returning on the same path.

As you approach St Florent (before the bridge over the river there’s a sharp turn to your left. Signed Plage De Roya. Take this turning and you’ll drive along the back of the beach before starting to head along towards less developed area with a few villas and houses dotted around. Keep going – the road is bumpy and narrow, but the track is pretty obvious. Drive up until you find an area of scrubland and what passes for a car park. Leave the car here and head downhill a bit and pick up the coastal path. You can walk right round to Plage De Loto or Plage de Saleccia (allow 4 hours in each direction!). Take lots of water and supplies as there's nowhere you can buy provisions

This is a beautiful botanical garden which has been developed over many years. If you love botanicals this is well worth a visit.

The only inhabited village on the island that has no road access. It's about 1.5 hours to hike down to the tiny coastal village of Girolata and about 2 hours return. There are a handful of restaurants and beach bars. It's a harbour so not really suitable for swimming. It's also possible to reach by boat from Calvi if you don't fancy the hike!
