Garn Lakes Local Nature Reserve used to be an area covered in spoil tips and old colliery workings but following an extensive land reclamation scheme it was officially opened in 1997 as a beautiful area for residents and visitors. It covers 40 hectares, and with lakes and grasslands it provides a diverse habitat and breeding grounds for a wide range of wildlife. There is a pub called the Whistle Inn a short walk from the lakes which serves food and drinks and also has a children's play area. The lakes are a 15 minute drive away or can be reached via bike, a 30-40 minute cycle from the house along the beautiful Old railway line.

Inside a modern covered building in today’s Caerleon you can still explore the remains of the immense natatio, or open-air swimming pool, that once held more than 80,000 gallons of water. Thanks to the wonders of film projection you’ll glimpse a Roman soldier still diving the depths today. You can also see the cramped rooms where the men slept and stored their weapons – the only Roman legionary barracks still on view in Europe. Caerleon town is well worth an explore with its historic castle walls and plenty of great pubs!
