Ancestors of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations were active in this place; meeting, trading, sharing stories, gathering and preparing food for at least 4,000 and up to 10,000 years - since the ending of the last glacial period. But then it became a military base...Fort Lawton, a small military base that many hoped would become a larger base attracting federal dollars to the Seattle area, but turned to disuse. By the 1970s, much of the fort's land was turned over to the City of Seattle to become Discovery Park. Great sprawling landscape with majestic bluffs, flora and fauna restoration and many trails
