Places to see

This is a short list of places and things in the area worth checking out.
Callicoon is a lovely village about 35 minutes south, through beautiful country roads. Callicoon is most certainly a destination in the area. The Main Street area has several good quality vintage stores, gourmet food stores, bookstores, high-end shops, and restaurants. And a movie theater. Callicoon is very pricey. So you're not likely to find any deals. But it's a great way to spend an afternoon.

About a 20-minute drive east on Route 17 (Exit 96), Livingston Manor is well worth the trip for its vintage and high-end stores, art shops, record store, great restaurants, BBQ places, Peck’s supermarket, and general good vibe. There are certainly expensive touristy and high-end stores, but there’s a good mix of affordable places as well. For really good quality and inexpensive vintage shopping, check out My Life Repurposed at 62 Main Street. While you’re in the area, also check out Jitterbug for records and tons of games and gifts. There’s a farmers market downtown on Sundays 10am to 2pm. If you’re into fishing, check out The Catskills Fly Fishing Center and Museum and the The Livingston Manor Fly Fishing Club.

Walton is commercial downtown area about 17 miles away. It’s worth a trip for the vintage shopping alone. Walton is most definitely not a tourist destination. So, deals can be had. There are about three or four good vintage stores worth checking out. Go north on Route 30 and take a left at Shinhopple through Bear Spring Mountain Wildlife Preserve to Route 10 and take a left. Walton is just over the bridge.

Downsville is a tiny village about 12 miles north on Route 30. Catskill Cellar is a very good wine store. There are also a few large quality antique shops. You’ll also want to check out Al’s Sport Store for fishing, hunting needs, plus great gifts. Al’s is THE place for canoe/kayak rentals. If you’re in the area on Sundays between 10am and 4pm, check out Gizmos & Gadgets on Main Street. Largest collection of vintage radios in the area and some of the most “time has stood still in 1985” merchandise you’ll ever want to see. Worth a visit for the curiosity itself.

The Pepacton Reservoir is one of the reservoirs that supply NYC with its water. Located within three towns and at 17 miles long, it’s absolutely striking to see. Head down Route 30 north towards Andes, you'll see it on the left just after you pass Al's shop in Downsville.

Delhi – About a 40-minute drive, Delhi is the Delaware County Seat. It’s also the home of SUNY Delhi, so you’ll find a good collection of stores and restaurants that cater to the college and post college crowd. Delhi had a really nice downtown area.

The East Branch of the Delaware is literally a five minute walk down Harvard Road. Winding its way through scenic mountains and sprawling valleys, the East Branch of the Delaware River flows through the beautiful Catskill region of New York before joining the West Branch on the Pennsylvania border. Records of the River’s charms exist as early as 1881, when John Burroughs, an American naturalist famous for his conservation efforts, wrote of his unforgettable experience boating the East Branch in an essay titled “A Summer Voyage.”

Don't Speed on Route 17

Route 17 is often heavily patrolled by police. Especially areas in Sullivan County where the speed limit is 55. Don' t ruin a weekend away by getting an expensive speeding ticket.

Limited Good Quality Food Shopping In Area

So, either bring your food from home or hit a good supermarket on the way up. Coming from the east, there's a decent ShopRite in Liberty off Exit 100A on Route 17. There's a Peck's Supermarket in Livingston Manor Route 17, Exit 96. Be warned, once you get within 15 miles of the house, food shopping becomes less appetizing.

Cell Service and Wifi

A word about cell service. The house is surrounded by mountains on all sides, so there is no cell service. Many places in the region have limited cell service due to the mountains. The house has a great WiFi connection. But just so you know, most people won't be able to receive or make cell calls at the house or on the road once you get north of the Sunoco Station on the right once you get on Route 30 from Route 17. You will need to set up WiFi calling on your phone before coming to the house.
