Situated within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, its lowland heathland and deciduous woodland habitats are home to many rare and threatened species. With a rich human history from Kings and commoners to smuggling and industry dating back centuries, Ashdown Forest is also the setting of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. On your doorstep This 83-hectare grassland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, just outside the village of Buxted. It was made into a deer park in the 12th century, but today deer are no longer kept here (although you may spot wild deer enjoying the park).

On your doorstep - The Wealdway passes through Buxted and links the villages of Blackboys and East Hoatly. The Wealdway is a long distance footpath in south-east England which makes its way three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and which connects the Thames Estuary with the English Channel through the Weald of Kent and Sussex. The Weald Way crosses chalk downlands, passes through river valleys and woodland (including Ashdown Forest) and across farmland. See online for routes.
