My favorite temples and Shrines. and more
Place of worship.
In ancient time (long ago before Kyoto founded) the Clan "Hata"moved from continent(some thinks it's central Asia) and settled down around here. Their rice farming was started.
For them, Mountains themselves around here are object of their worship. This shrine started as a their private worship for rich harvest of their rice farming. so the messenger foxes are holding rice pod in their mouth)
If you seek the real atmosphere that japanese shintoism has, You should visit this the world famous shinto shrine complex just before sunrise or sunset.
In the dark, mysterious statues are under small lightings and the deities seem to accept all wishes from people.
then you will feel the thousands gates like a path to the another world.
The subway and Keihan line can bring you there
but You can also use Taxi cab to there from TGK
It takes about 2,000JPY and 20 min

To celebrate 1100th year from Foundation of this city. It was a part of The first Expo in Japan.
So This shrine is a smaller model of ancient Emperor’s palace.
Now it turned into a shrine and is dedicated to the 50th Emperor “Kanmu” the Founder of Kyoto.

Bar-master Ken is not super-out going but friendly and kind. If you can introduce yourself as a guest of my place, He will not hesitate to give you information and tips about this city.

When you need exercise more than walking, you should try a trekking to the top of Mt.Daigo(Upper daigo-ji temple) The temple at the end of the trekking course is the very origin of this huge temple complex. You can feel the essence of special worship for mountains among Japanese people. 10 min to the starting point, then 1.5 hours to the top on foot. Correct shoes required. No flip-flap
