Food Scene

Barrio bakery is close by, but out of the downtown area, perfect for a low-key morning coffee stop (their coffee is amazing!) and some baked goods. They also turn into Pizza Barrio most nights of the week, which is one of our favorite pizza spots in the Burlington area. If you're lucky enough to hit it on a Tuesday you can get half priced bottles of wines!

One of the best breakfast spots in Burlington! I would recommend either arriving early, or putting your name in and then grabbing a coffee on Church st./walking around while you wait. That being said--the wait is worth it.

Himalayan restaurant right off Church St. that out-of-towners wouldn't necessarily find. If you enjoy Indian, Nepalese, or Pakistani food then eating here is a must! It is by far one of our favorite spots, especially if you are looking for warm winter food.

Trattoria Delia is one of the most expensive restaurants in Burlington, but is definitely worth the price for a special occasion. I would recommend it for a special dinner for a couple (that ideally are foodies and can really appreciate it), but it wouldn't be great for kids. We had one of the best meals of our lives here!

Hen of the Wood is an expensive dinner spot, but has a great ambiance and an impressive bar. Everyday there are $1 oysters between 4-5pm and 10-11pm. On weekends it can be busy so I would recommend arriving early to grab a drink and a spot at the bar or lounge before oysters start. Their whiskey sour is amazing--and I'm not a whiskey drinker.

My second favorite breakfast behind Penny Cluse. Generally there will be a long wait here on weekends since Burlington lacks breakfast/brunch spots, but again it is worth the wait for a good brunch and you can grab a coffee and walk around while you wait for your table.

Maglianero is both a cafe and gallery. Their coffee is really good--but still a bit overpriced. That being said, it is a beautiful space and a bit quieter than cafes downtown. This is a great place to do work or have a lazy morning coffee.

Shopping

Shopping for everyone, local stores and other large chains. Lots of good window shopping as well as spots to buy gifts large and small. There are also lots of great cafes and outdoor areas to sit during the warmer months.

Drinks & Nightlife

Radio Bean is connected to Duino Duende (the restaurant section), and Light Club Lamp Shop, which is more similar to Radio Bean with performances and a bar. All three are connected and very laid back with generally something going on from music to stand-up to poetry readings. You never know what you're going to get, but it is incredibly close to our apartment and a good place to end your night. The food is OK, but I find it to be overpriced. Eat somewhere else, but come here for a cocktail, some dessert, and music.

This is an iconic spot, where Phish first starting playing gigs. There are different themed nights and lots of difference residencies for artists. There is generally a cover fee, but a lot of fun!

Drifters is a new bar that opened in the Old North End. It has cheap beer, wine, and cider as well as an inexpensive (but really good) tapas menu. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a bite to eat at a low-key bar that isn't on Church St.

Citizen Cider is a very popular spot in Burlington. They do serve beer in addition to their cider, but if you are going then it is well worth trying a flight of their various ciders. On the weekends it can be pretty busy, but it is a fun spot to hang as a couple or in larger group.

Foam is one of the newer breweries in town. I like it more for the location than anything else and in the summer months there is outdoor seating that looks out towards Lake Champlain. This is a very low key brewery that often has music during the weekend nights.

Sightseeing

The Lake Champlain Bike Path is a great spot for walking, running, and biking. It is easy to walk to from downtown and is a great spot to have a picnic or enjoy the sunset with Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks as the backdrop.

Parks & Nature

Ethan Allen is a short drive from our apartment. We take our dog here nearly everyday, your walk can be anywhere from half a mile to 3 miles depending how far you want to go. The trails take you along the Winooski river and are a nice spot for dogs to safely roam off leash. That being said--there are signs to keep your dog leashed, but it is not enforced and you will notice everyone on the trail has their dog off leash. Ethan Allen closes as sunset so keep that in mind if you decide to go for a walk!

Sucker Brook is the slightly more challenging trail compared to Five Tree Hill since it is more uphill. The hike will take you about 30 minutes and truly isn't that challenging for anyone that does moderate amounts of exercise. The summit (same as that for Five Tree Hill) is an amazing view out over Lake Champlain to the Adirondacks.

Essentials

City Market is the local-well-loved co-op. You don't need a membership to shop there and you will find nearly everything you might need for you stay in their aisles. City Market is more expensive than other super markets, but you can get some great last minute gifts here or any Vermont Beer purchases on your way out of town. They also have a hot bar and pre-made food for lunch or a car ride home.
