Bit of a drive but more than worth it. Climb the second-largest granite dome in the US with an uphill but pretty mild one-mile hike. Stop at Pedernales Falls State Park on your way back. The Hill Country has some of the most beautiful natural areas I've ever seen.
Take a picnic lunch and/or a couple beers, hang out in a butterfly garden, and float in a spring-fed pool complete with caves, waterfalls, and natural slides.

Texas is a weird state, and its history is fascinating. The Texas Capitol is a beautiful pink replica of the US Capitol and the inside is now a free museum. The grounds are lovely and on Tuesday nights is home to the Austin Flow Jam, which is when a bunch of hippies do hula hoops and stuff if you're into that. My girlfriend often goes.
