The City Hall is without doubt the single most representative building of Sarajevo. In addition to its many valuable monuments. The project was overseen by Alexander Wittek who had propise his Pseudo Moorish design- the prefect architectural unity of East and West - for the future seat of the city's goverment. Since it first opened on April 20,1896, the building has become the most important symbol of Sarajevo and is featured as an iconic motif in many photographs of the city. After World War II , Vijećnica became home to the National and University Library of BiH. On the nights of August 25-26, 1992 during the last war, Vijećnica was set ablaze . Nearly 90% of the library's collection went up in flames and the building became a symbol of the Siege and tragedy of Sarsjevo. The building was built in pseudo-Moorish style, which is style origins found in Islamic art of Spain and North Africa. During the siege of Sarajevo, in the night between 25 and 26 August 1992 from the side of Bosnian Serbs and the JNA, Hall was shelled and set on fire. The fire destroyed the catalog of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 80 percent of the book fund and documents that testify to the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina was destroyed, that created priceless damage. Renovation of the City Hall began in 1996, on the 100th anniversary of the completion of its construction. Hall has 208 openings, of which 187 windows. Restoration of joinery was a delicate task, especially because chose oak as an expression of authenticity. It was found like the original - which encourages from the area between Srebrenik and the Brcko.
