It served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. It's where the Prime Minister hoists the Indian flag on Republic Day each year and gives a speech. I highly recommend seeing it early morning, especially if you are a photographer.

The Red Fort is a historic fort in the city of Delhi in India, which served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors. Every year on the Independence day of India (15 August), the Prime Minister hoists the Indian "tricolour flag" at the main gate of the fort and delivers a nationally broadcast speech from its ramparts

Redfort is at the heart of Old Delhi it is the oldest fort in the city designed to host 50 k people inside the large walls in case of a battle.
