This Basilica is the most imposing and important church in Bologna. Visit it! It is one of the most attracting monuments of the city! Don't bring backpacks or big bags for the controls

Although this is not the cathedral of Bologna, it is definitely the most prominent church. Make sure you see the enormous meridian line on the floor, the pendulum that tracks the movement of the earth, and the frescoes in the chapel of the magi, which inspired Dante in his writing of his Divine Comedy.

he Basilica of San Petronio is the main church of Bologna, northern Italy. It dominates the Piazza Maggiore. It is the sixth largest church in the world, stretching for 132 meters in length and 60 meters in width, while the vault reaches 45 meters inside and 51 meters in the facade. It can contain about 28,000 persons. The basilica is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Petronius, who was the bishop of Bologna in the fifth century. The construction was a communal project of Bologna, not of the bishops. The property was a symbol of communal power that was not transferred from the city to the diocese until 1929; the basilica was finally consecrated in 1954. It has been the seat of the relics of Bologna's patron saint only since 2000. The interior is notable for a Madonna with Saints by Lorenzo Costa the Younger and a Pietà by Amico Aspertini. Also the colours of the walls and the stained glass windows are noteworthy. The choir was made in 15th century by Agostino de' Marchi, while the ciborium is a work by Vignola. Piazza Maggiore San Petronio is the patron saint of Bologna. Inside there is a sundial. The panoramic terrace can be visited. The Basilica of San Petronio is the largest church in Bologna: it dominates the Piazza Maggiore opposite and, despite being largely unfinished, it is one of the largest churches in Europe. Its imposing dimensions make it the fourth largest church in Italy. The building, built by civic and non-ecclesiastical will, should have been in the shape of a cross (224 meters long and 158 meters wide) and thus become the largest basilica in Christianity. But the Archiginnasio, a palace financed entirely by Pontifical resources and completed in 1562, was built just 12 meters from the basilica, parallel to the main nave, thus preventing the ambitious Latin cross project from being carried out.
