Located on the summit of Gellert Hill, this fortress was built by the Habsburgs in 1854 to keep the city under surveillance. From this place you will have the most amazing wide angle view of the capital, with all the important buildings and sights in front of you.

Budapest’s biggest lookout tower is actually a fort crowning central Gellért Hill – however, the Citadel was not built to defend the city, but to stand as a constant threat over the local populace.

Best overhead views of Budapest! This is a stop on the hop on, hop off busses, but for the more adventurous, take the #4 metro line from Rakoczi square or #7 bus from Blaha Lujza to Hotel Gellert and hike up to the top of Gellert hill.
