You must visit what is left of the once vast Sherwood Forest, where the famous outlaw Robin Hood is said to have hidden within his men. It’s possible to walk around it in half an hour though of course you can take your time and walk more paths. You can see the famous Major Oak, possibly 900-1000 years old and also visit Edwinstowe craft centre. Local legend recounts that Robin married Maid Marion in St Mary’s church in Edwinstowe. Opposite the church is a decent pub and restaurant the Forest Lodge and also the restaurant Launays (little more upmarket). All less than 10 minutes drive from Cocking Hill House.

As a landmark thousands of years in the making, it is alive with nature, history and folklore waiting to be discovered. The most famous resident of Sherwood Forest, after Robin Hood himself of course, is the iconic Major Oak – the giant oak where he reputedly hid – attracting thousands of visitors every year. Standing prominently against the Forest’s 900 ancient oak trees, it is Britain’s biggest oak with its impressive canopy spreading 28 metres, a trunk circumference of 11 metres and an estimated weight of 23 tonnes! It is a spectacle to behold whatever the season.
