Great spot to get out of town in less than an hour. Don't go when it's windy. You may get your feet wet too. The beach isn't suitable to swim at (Dangerous). Great views from on top of the hills. Below the lighthouse is a great bouldering/climbing spot.

There is a great 3-4 hour walk near the mouth of the Wainuiomata river that includes the headland the Bering Head lighthouse is on.
