History

For the history buffs, a few interesting museums and sites.
This is 2 minute drive from Cocking Hill House. You can walk there in 15 minutes (though up a steep hill without footpaths). On Sundays there is often a Holocaust survivor speaking - check their website for details. They’re nearly all in their 90s now, so we’re the last generations to hear eyewitnesses. The main exhibit is suitable for age 12 upwards. There is an exhibition called the Journey designed for age 9 years and upwards. The centre has a cafe usually serving serving soup and sandwiches.

I’ve put the village hall here because it’s the only option Airbnb has to point you to the local historic village of Laxton. It is the only village in the U.K. that still farms the same system as during feudal times. All the farmers live in the village and share three large fields on the edge of the village. There are plaques on the walls of the farms with the names of the farm. Each year the fields are divided in to strips allocated to the farms. They all grow the same crops and rotate the crops which helps prevent disease. Each third year the fields would lie ‘fallow’ allowing the land to rest. There is a hill on one side of the village that is the site of the ‘Motte and Bailey’. King John of the Robin Hood fables once visited there. We’re right on the edge of where Sherwood Forest would have been. The village of Laxton were the keepers and foresters of this once hugely important Royal Forest. There is a Norman church and a lovely pub - The Dovecote Inn (book early for groups to avoid disappointment). To get there, turn right out of the gate, up the steep Cocking Hill, past the National Holocaust Centre - the village is 1.5 mile away. So 5 minutes drive or half an hour walk. There are no pathways on the road. It’s not a busy road but if walking, remember to walk facing on coming traffic. On the main road to Laxton there is bridleway you can walk that cuts across fields to reach the village also.

This is an outdoor trip to a site 20 minutes drive from Cocking Hill House, with signs of some of the oldest human habitation, dating back to the end of the last ice age.

Parks and activities

Letting of steam - walks, biking and other outdoor activities
You must visit what is left of the once vast Sherwood Forest, where the famous outlaw Robin Hood is said to have hidden within his men. It’s possible to walk around it in half an hour though of course you can take your time and walk more paths. You can see the famous Major Oak, possibly 900-1000 years old and also visit Edwinstowe craft centre. Local legend recounts that Robin married Maid Marion in St Mary’s church in Edwinstowe. Opposite the church is a decent pub and restaurant the Forest Lodge and also the restaurant Launays (little more upmarket). All less than 10 minutes drive from Cocking Hill House.

Not to be confused with nearby Sherwood Forest, Sherwood Pines is a great place for biking and walking. If you don’t have your own bikes is possible to rent, but in peak periods they often run out of bikes. Go Ape also have a site in Sherwood Pines if you are up for a climb/walk in the tree canopy - see separate entry in this guide book.

Activities here are mostly for groups of 6 or larger: paintball, assault courses, axe throwing (yes, that’s right). But some are suitable for 2-3 people eg 4x4 off roading. Many are for adults or over 12s but some eg archery, assault courses for aged 8 and over.
