Great mountain town about 35 minutes from Ruidoso with a cool mountain lodge that boasts the 5th highest golf course in the country, ice skating, sightseeing, shops, restaurants, & a historical railroad bridge spanning two mountain slopes. Definately worth a trip and don't go through Alamogordo or you'll miss all the beauty of the drive!!

Alto is more of a high desert type of topography with awesome mountain vistas just N of Ruidoso. Many of the golf courses are in that area plus Alto Lake.

The historic town of Lincoln in Lincoln County, NM is the famous town of Billy the Kid and his mentor, John Tunstall, where you can still see famous sites like John Tunstalls store and the Lincoln County Jail where Billy the Kid was housed on several occasions. Worth the trip!

Nice links course built over the old airport. Lots of mounds without many trees so definitely a links course. Pretty views and challenging course. I recommend it.

Cree Meadows golf course is great for golfers who like shorter holes and a non-traditional course that isn't a 72 par course. Has carts and enjoyable to play especially with wives or kids. Great family course.

The Rainmaker course is semi-private and an extremly difficult course to play. Not for the faint of heart or beginners. It's long and sloped and challenging to say the least but extremely well designed and gorgeous as the day is long!!

Great place to bet the horses. Mostly quarter horse racing but some thoroughbread racing. Casino on-site plus many improvements the last few years. They also have concerts in the summer and many cool events. Very fun place and I highly recommend it.

Fishing
The upper canyon in Ruidoso is found by going to the end of Sudderth and turning right at the round-a-bout. Take the road and follow the river until you come to a gate at the end. This is the Mescalero Tribe fishing and camping area. You can trout fish the river for a nominal fee and my son and I have caught many trout there over the years.

Lake Bonito has been under a renovation project since the Little Bear Fire that occured a few years ago but they plan to fill it soon so verify with locals before driving up. It is beautiful though still w great camping and hiking everywhere! Definitely worth a drive up there.

Great lake to fish but they also have a floating play fort that you can pay to let your kids play on. Lots of hiking trails and horse back riding as well via Grindstone Stables. Kayaks, canoes, etc. are rentable along w fishing gear and bait.

Beautiful, quiet place to fish away from others most of the time. Log picnic table is fun for picnics. Very relaxing and has 2 ponds to fish.

Silver Lake does have a campground associated with it but it is on the scenic drive over to Cloudcroft from Ruidoso. Really pretty and not normally busy but can be if campground is full. My son and I really like it so it's on our list to fish when we go.

Smokey the Bear Ranger Station is a great resource for hiking, biking, camping, & 4x4 maps of Lincoln County. Definitely recommend stopping in for info on the area!
