Located about 25 minutes from Shaver Lake, McKinley Gove is a historical site and nature trail where you can walk through a handful of giant Sequoia trees. Area amenities include picknick tables, drinking water, and bathrooms. Please note that this area is only open from May-November.

Located about 25 minutes from Shaver Lake, McKinley Gove is a historical site and nature trail where you can walk through a handful of giant Sequoia trees. Area amenities include picknick tables, drinking water, and bathrooms. Please note that this area is only open from May-November.

There is a trail leading from the parking lot about 0.5 miles to a small lake. This area is perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, picknicks, birdwatching, or just hanging out by the water!

Shaver Lake is located approx. 50 miles East of Fresno nestled in the Sierra National Forest at an elevation of 5,500 ft. Shaver Lake is popular for a mountain getaway to explore nature. With year-round activities, there is always something fun to do!
History of Shaver Lake:
The name honors C.B. Shaver, founder of the Fresno Flume and Irrigation Company that built the dam and created the lake. The lake served as a mill pond for the Shaver Sawmill and the source for a flume that ran 42 miles to Clovis, CA. The original town of Shaver was buried under the lake when the Thomas A. Edison Company purchased and enlarged the lake in 1919.
The area now covered by the lake was extensively logged before the dam was built, and an extensive log flume system several miles long was constructed to bring logs down the mountain. The town to this day maintains a nostalgic logging theme. Several buildings in town are in fact old, converted sawmills. Adjacent to the lake is Camp Edison, built and operated by SCE.
