A good place to visit on Wellington’s south coast, possibly following a visit to the Brooklyn wind turbine. There is an easy coastal walk (sturdy shoes recommended) to a fur seal colony from the car park. Note: keep a reasonable distance from the seals so you don’t stress them.
You get to see hundreds of Sea Lions sun bathing in a raw and rugged coastal environmental setting within the Wellington Region
Stroll from Owhiro Bay to visit the seals at Red Rocks. Take a lunch and a drink and make a bit of a day of it.
Seals! Whenever you go, you can see lot of seals around the coast and enjoying the sunbath. You can walk in from the gate(30 mins - 1 hour), or you can drive in if you have a 4WD.
Walk around the rugged south coast to red rocks, where the rocks are red! There is a seal colony on the point too.

“Worth the drive up via the suburb of Brooklyn. If it’s windy you’ll experience Wellington’s wind but also great views. If you fancy a movie there’s a boutique movie theatre in Brooklyn called the Penthouse which has a nice cafe also. Or if you fancy continuing your drive, you can drive to the south coast via Ohiro Road in Brooklyn. ”
