Drive with the family through the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge to see Bison in there native habitat, whitetail deer, prairie dogs, and you may even spot the occasional bald eagle. Go for a relaxing hike on trails around the many lakes and ponds. Or stop in at the nature center for interesting info on all of the wonderful flora and fauna that call the Arsenal home.

You don’t have to venture all the way out into the wilderness to see some wildlife in Colorado; just downtown of the city lies the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, a 15,000-acre wildlife sanctuary where you can spot white-tailed deer, bison, owls, bald eagles, prairie dogs, and hawks not to mention brilliant sunsets. The refuge is open every day from sunrise to sunset, and during the summer months there is an abundance of wildlife to amaze at, from white pelicans in the skies and burrowing owls nesting in empty prairie dog burrows, to frogs, painted turtles and fish in the wetlands, while the grasslands become awash with wildflowers.

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a 15,988-acre National Wildlife Refuge located adjacent to Commerce City, Colorado, in the United States. It is approximately 8 miles northeast of downtown Denver. The refuge is on the grounds of the former Rocky Mountain Arsenal, a United States Army chemical weapons manufacturing facility. The site was designated a national wildlife refuge in 1992 by the United States Congress, and underwent a costly environmental cleanup in order to remove pollutants. The refuge is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. More than 330 species of wildlife inhabit the refuge, including raptors, deer, raccoons, coyotes, white pelicans, black-footed ferrets, black-tailed prairie dogs, and bison.

This is a very large stretch of land that used to be an arsenal. It was turned into a wildlife refuge. You will find all sorts of wildlife here, but the buffalo are the best to see! Trails for walking, but most people just drive around for scenic views. There is a small museum for the history of the place and the animals who live there.
